I got letters from the premium bond people NS&I recently to say they needed to have a UK paying account or trade in premium bonds held as being in the EU we could not hold them. Well, I and my late OH had one each since we were babies bought then for £1 so I rang them and they said to fill in the forms and send back and we could redeem the value or claim any outstanding prizes. OH premium bond was traded in and £3 reimbursed into a Lloyds account with hardly anything in it and I am waiting to hear if mine has awakened any unclaimed prizes and then it will also be traded in and thats that, finished with another UK institution.
IIRC (and I think it was @kirsteastevenson who outlined this) the two institutions are in fact separate (BBL and BC). BC is not unlike mbna in many respects - my mbna account (unconnected to any UK bank institution apart from Halifax for direct payment of any balance) appears to be unaffected (for now at any rate…)
I raised the question as my research suggests that Barclaycard is ultimately owned by its parent company Barclays plc however unlike Barclays UK who are closing non UK resident accounts Barclaycard is worldwide so perhaps will not withdraw their service from the likes of me, we shall see.
MBNA in the uk is owned since 2017 and now just a card brand within Lloyds banking group.
After 50 years of both personal and business banking with Barclays they messaged me at the weekend to say that they woukd not be closing our account.
2 days later the following message arrived
And 2 weeks ago I received my new debit card addressed and delivered to France!
Today an email arrived asking me to log on to my account to view my latest statements but if course the website wouldn’t let me log on.
Left hand doesn’t know what right hand is doing.
I emptied all Barclays accounts 6 months ago and submitted closure forms but they only closed 3 of the 4!
All in all I’m just as pleased to say goodbye to them as they are to me.
My new relationship with HSBC is working well.
It has made me reflect on how much banking has changed in 50 years beyond all recognition. Once apon a time a bank manager was a real person to do business with and take a punt on your aspirations, no business development plans and number crunching just a good order book and a word with the right people.
Like you @JohnBoy at the time of those notifications I closed our Bankleys Bark account which we had for a similar period to you and haven’t regretted it an iota.
They’ve clearly lost the plot!
On the nail!
Funny thing is we still have our Barclay Credit Card accounts having changed to on-line notifications only and supplied a UK address and mobile number.
We keep them alive with occasional use for conveinience when purchasing stuff for UK family.
Funny thing is I tried to use mine for a large purchase in December in France which followed a rush of french purchases on the same card. The large on-line purchase was declined followed by a phone call to our French landline from Barclaycard queirying the attempted payment. The lady explained she had just spoken to our daughter (our UK moblie number) who explained we were currently in France so gave the lady our number.
A quick chat with Barclaycard confirmed that I had made the attempted purchase and the block was lifted on my card. Best wishes were conveyed for my stay in France and thanked for using Barclaycard.
Both our credit cards remain live and usable!!
IIRC, Barclay Card and Bankleys Bark are different entities which might explain it
Yes I think so but that didn’t stop my Barclay credit card balance from appearing on my Barclays Bank statements each month which of course are now closed.
