I’m surprised that you’re including yourself in that group.
Every European who has mentioned Brexit to me has said something like, are the British mad? More a case of bewilderment than seeking revenge.
Actually that’s a good point.
Expats as permanent tourists are great for a country’s finances - but maybe the little person wouldn’t so much care about that if s/he were to bring house price increases.
As you know UK house prices are silly and increasing!
Oh dear now you are showing your ignorance. If you misunderstood that sensational financial headline I’ve lost all confidence in your expertise and knowledge in your other financial essays.
Macron’s the main story in the UK today.
“Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez recently announced a proposal that has created concern in the Spanish real estate market—a 100% tax on property purchases for non-European buyers.”
This is British exceptionalism at it’s best. You’ve completely misunderstood what Spain is doing and it’s certainly not targeting Brits.
For someone so focused on research and detail, your insight is sadly lacking on the post-Brexit views of the UK. The widest sentiments are bewilderment and pity.
You may not be able to see this - but ‘betrayal’ was the first emotion that was experienced.
Much darker than incredulity!
Taking in Brits.
Oooooo @Dave_Lawson’s company!
(time to find out about devere)
Let’s see… I have talked to people who are genuinely amazed that Brexit happened and now you are telling me I got it wrong? I think not. If you are going to come and live in France or any other country for that matter please leave your mistruths, ignorance of reality and prejudice behind. I’m now seriously concerned about which newspapers you read to pick up do much misinformation and bias.
You seem to like posting things that you believe will prove your point of view. They are hardly an unbiased source. The Spanish tax increases were talked about buy they were nothing like the way your favourite newspapers decided it should be. You and they are scaremongering. The talk was about property taxes for non residents and the need to raise them. In fact it’s similar to what many British councils have been doing for a long time. St Ives in Cornwall is probably the best example.
Lol, you’ve posted a link to an article posted on Unherd - a site founded and funded by the guy who set up GBNews And you genuinely expect us to take that seriously?
The day after the end of transition our mayor came and knocked on the door to say something rather similar. And to apologise for having to give me a letter that confirmed I had been eradicated from electoral list.
Interesting - never ‘heard’ of them before.
Links aside - simple idea.
EU - higher ideal.
Richer countries have to carry the poorer countries eg ‘PIIGS’.
UK - richer country.
UK leaves.
I think that it’s reasonable for betrayal to be a primary emotion.
The EU experiment sought to elevate people above petty nationalism.
Of course - petty nationalism is everywhere now these days … … vindicating the principle underling the EU?
Not really too sure what the fuss is about?
It’s a little like a husband cheating on a wife in BREXIT - imagine the wife’s emotional reactions eg
Notice how many of these have been mentioned over the course of this thread.
shock, anger, betrayal, sadness, confusion, hurt, disbelief, and a deep sense of violation
Perhaps it’s just to show us where his true allegiances lie?
TBH I do not think France is for you if your analysis remains so limited and biased. Encounters in daily life with local French people get far more the why on earth did Britain do this and how sad it must be for British people to be out of the EU.
That is, when they have time, as Brexit is a much more inportant topic for us than them.
But if you would not learn from what French people woold tell you if they have any time ro discuss the topic then France is not for you.
I find this very odd, I don’t think most of us (French people) think about British people at all unless we have friends who are British (and in that case we’re a bit bemused and sorry for them) and otherwise couldn’t really care less. We have lives.
Like me, then
Edited to add I disagree with these concitoyens of mine whom you have met.
Back on the subject of Tips For Brits Moving To France, here’s one from today’s “Proof of address” thread.
Get all bills/registrations in joint names, especially your EDF contract as this is the defacto proof of address all French services will accept.
And don’t forget cartes grises. Good to have those in both names from the outset. Trying to add a spouse retrospectively will do your head in.
