We brought my mother over 18 months ago and applied in her own name for a carte vitale based on the S1. She is still waiting but did get an Attestation which has in the end paid for an operation and a new pacemaker. It means we still have some paperwork to go through but it is manageable in the meantime. We don't have top up insurance for ourselves and it would be very expensive for Mum as she is 89 but as some of her ailments are covered 100% it's not too bad. Although she speaks French she has still found it a culture shock living in a small rural village but she has managed to make some friends in the Maison de Retraite in the next village.
