That’s my route.
And the N153 I think it’s call,ed before that, which goes practically all the way to the A10 and further if you need.
Wimps can opt onto the motorway at Chartres
The N154, last trip my BIL did just that and jumped on the A11 to Le Mans then on the A28 to Tours. I explained if he stayed on the 154 a bit longer he could have gone directly on to the A10 and down to Tours without the long detour
It’s superb, but I’d also put Amiens at, or near the top of my list of magnificent Gothic cathedrals.
There was an amazing son et lumiere show projected onto the cathedral? I’ve been looking for pictures but can’t find any - either I just sat back and enjoyed, or my memory’s gone.
I think it’s before in one direction, and after in the other. You are kept entirely separate from vehicle traffic and bussed on and off. You also get a special call for all foot passengers as to when to assemble at the Purser’s office to disembark.
People taking the ferry this summer who plan to visit the centre of Dieppe itself, as opposed to the ferry terminal and then heading onwards, might want to allow for extra time. The historic Pont Colbert swing bridge (see arrow below) that links the town to the ferry terminal (at top of map) has just been dismantled, lowered into a barge and towed off, to be completely overhauled, for the next 15 months. Dieppe is effectively cut off from its ferry terminal, bar a long, winding detour.
Thanks for the heads-up @George1 - I usually just whizz up the hill and on to the D-roads down to the N27, but that’s a good tip for anyone planning to fill up with essence or grab something to eat before heading south…
Thanks George, wont try to go go through the centre now, some great restaurants in the town but will need extra time to get back out and on to ferry terminal hill.
They should fill up at the Sainsbury’s in Newhaven 20p cheaper per litre. Alternatively there is the fuel staition at the top of hill part of the Carrefour on the D458.
Yes that’s what I usually do, but if you’re in a hurry to catch the ferry…
Failing to plan and all that… just pointing it out. It also closes at 10pm so with ferry leaving at 12 am or just after an important consideration.
Yes the “official” route on all signs and in satnavs approaching Dieppe from the South for the ferry, has for many years now signed motorists on a detour round Dieppe that must be at least 10-15 miles extra!
Whereas if you have things to do in Dieppe it was always best to ignore the signs trying to keep cars on the way to the ferry out of Dieppe, then head for that swing bridge in the Old Town. It was particularly timesaving to just head for the bridge if you were arriving in Dieppe at, say, 0200am in good time for the early morning ferry. (Not too much earlier, as sometime after or near midnight i recall the bridge does swing - the other way - and I remember waiting something like 45 mins as I got there just as the red lights went up for the bridge closing.)
Thanks for the heads up George. I suppose the way out of the town towards the ferry would now mean heading for the roundabout near Auchan which has a McDo very close, then the old route over the other bridge within the town to the ferry. (was always the old route before Dieppe got even more ridiculous with the current turnoff a while before Dieppe that is a monster detour).
Thanks for the heads up George1.
Ooh er missus
If you havent used the new section of the N27, it skirts the slow and often a queue old slow part of the route so a much smoother run to the ferry.
Yes I used this for the first time last September and it’s much better than it was. I was confused as because I was following my sat-nav I found myself on a bit of very unfamiliar new road!!
I don’t mind bypasses if they keep me out of traffic.
I have watched it being built over a few years but yes didnt even realise I was on it until the old houses were not there.
The new stretch of road, the N27, really makes the journey to the ferry terminal much smoother, quicker and by passes the centre of town completely. It’s opening was apparently long delayed due to local politics. My satnav still refuses to accept it exists, even when you’re actually on it!
Thats the reason I gave up and sold my satnavs. Things like 50mph on the M25 when the work finished 4 years prior, despite me contacting Garmin yearly to advise. There were lots of other errors besides and people paid for updates! Apps were far quicker with updates or traffic posted by users.
As long as you can get a phone signal! I rely on my phone when navigating on my motorbike (my satnav is not waterproof and I can’t justify paying £300-odd for a dedicated motorbike one) and bizarrely, I got lost a couple of years ago in Normandy when the phone signal dropped off! it was around Bourg-Achard if I remember correctly, near where the A28 and A13 meet - anyway wherever it was it was a region where I did not expect to get a signal drop-out.
Bits of Surrey are still mobile dead-spots, ditto the wilds of Devon.
Re the traffic / speed limit stuff, the Garmin that I have in the car connects to a phone app for that, so (with the proviso already mentioned about a signal) it does seem to be quite up to date.
I think the older sat-navs like my previous Garmin that picked up a broadcast through an aerial wire in the power cable were prone to being out of date.
Yes last time I cam back from France via Dieppe I was running late and was pleased the new road made up some time for me!
The reason why I was late was a bit of a saga which I shall perhaps relate another time!
