Oh Gawd, I’ve only just got used to to not calling women ‘ladies’. How does a man now address women? Do we resort to formal Mme or Mrs? If so then I am going to insist on equality and you may call me ‘Sir’ or Mr’’ - so there.
I always get a thrill when arriving for the first time at a town whose name has been familiar through hearing about it on the radio or reading about it somewhere.
Seeing the name on a station platform or on the side of a bus never fails to charm me. I lived in Bolton for a year in the 1960s and remember arriving there and walking through the town, on air! It was much nicer than I imagined a northern town could be, and I still have fond memories of my time there, the local people, the tripe shop, local public houses and public baths.
The same with Burnley, Rawtenstall and Widnes. Great, homely, unassuming but proud conurbations. Reading, Rugby, Ramsgate, Ripon, all charming in their own way. Real England at its best.
Adlestrop
(And Down Ampney )
I had the strangest feeling of familiarity in Lahore, because of Kim. And in Damascus, because of the Bible.
Memories of all night dancing at Wigan Casino?
I get called it often at least I don’t have to newer to o frogs legs of course all with a great sense of humour
Perhaps it’s the institution of the EU they hate rather than ‘foreigners’.
I went cycling through Down Ampney yesterday. A sweet little village
And did you hum the tune?
A truly beautiful tune, well known to me as a hymn since childhood.
No Sorry. I didn’t know it.
I think I was humming “hungry like a wolf” actually
“hungry like a wolf” @anon58066726
Sounds good, Darren!
Doesn’t come across that way to me I have to admit. Just a side joke, my brother asked to say I had joined the French Foreign Legion rather than say I had become French. Easier to explain to his mates!
Boris Johnson is a gold plated turd, scratch the surface to truly find what lies beneath…IMHO
God help the UK if he gets elected
You are in the Cotswolds then around Cirencester.
We lived there for twenty years.
Enjoy your holiday.
Not me Jane although I love that part of the world, Darren Street is there - I know the area as I lived in Poulton, between Betty’s Grave and Ready Token and worked in Stonehouse and at the RAC.
Nor me. To me it is a friendly term and does not cause upset. People today are so touchy and PC. Just get on with life and treat others as you would expect to be treated yourself.
…and some of us can’t afford it.
