French Driving Licence.. ambiguous advice

Unless you meet the criteria for exchange which is, 6 months before expiry of 4b if you have a card or if you have an old pink or green original licence you can actually apply now if it’s tatty, lost/stolen, new category to be added or points to be taken, then there’s nothing you need do right now.

Your application has been closed due to lack of activity for 6 months from the last interaction, so at some point you may have been asked for information.

When does your card/licence expire?

Hi Kim,

I was indeed asked for more photographs of my licence back in 2022.

My UK licence expires in 2031 (it was renewed in 2021) so, I think, I must exchange it.

No you still don’t meet the criteria for exchange. It’s when you passed your test that is the main criteria, before 01/01/2021 and from 01/01/2021.

If you passed your test pre 2021 then it’s what is in column 10 on the rear of your card and not what the 4a date is on your card, you will be eligible to exchange 6 months before 4b date on your card or if you meet one of the other criterias I have already mentioned.

Then that is why your application was cancelled.

Ah! Thanks very much. Now I understand that I made a mistake when I read the advice as “renewed after 2021” rather than “test passed after 2021”. Great, I’ll just sit tight until 2031 :grinning:. Thanks very much for your help.

Hi

Question for Kim or others lol what is a TDSS

Titre de séjour special, for diplomats and international workers. Answered by Wozza in post 10 above, too.

Hmm, I just got a speeding fine with points off. I paid it online, but I didn’t see anything about being obliged to switch license. Is this an opportunity that I am missing?

If you are still struggling, try Googling “agence carte grise” plus your location. There are registered agencies which specialise in driving documentation. I struggled with ANTS to renew my 3 year expired French driving license going round and round in circles. Our local agency sorted the problem very quickly.

If you want to change tour license then yes it is a perfect opportunity!! I was gutted as found out ages after I’d been done years ago. Recently got another but only a fine no points

It’s your responsibility to put in an exchange of your licence if you committed an infraction where points are to be taken. You’re not notified unless you have a French licence.

Edit. Ensure you include a copy of your infraction in the 7 additional documents, Section 5.0 on ANTS.

Your local France Services will do it or your prefecture.

Jane explained what it is but here’s a picture for you, generally this is what they look like.

Thank you Kim, this is very helpful.

One question, is it the DVLA that I need to contact for this document:

Attestation des droits à conduire de moins de 3 mois délivrée par les autorités britanniques ayant délivré le permis de conduire.

Hi Carti, yes but you can get it online if you have access to your licence online.

You generate a code and then send the code to print which will download as a pdf, this pdf is what you will upload.

If you live outside of Paris then no translations required for this document.

If by any chance you don’t have access then you will need to call the DVLA and ask them for the D737 confirmation of driving rights, they will email this to you.

Perfect, I have got. I assume that they don’t need the check code to be active as it expires in 21 day, compared to the 3 month limit requested by ANTS?

The pdf document for the attestation de droits lasts 6 months. The 21 days is if you are hiring a car in the UK.

The application hasn’t been updated it’s not 3 months but 6.

Hi Kim,

Thank you for your excellent advice so far. I am about to submit my docs via ANTS, but just checking this:

“If you live outside of Paris then no translations required for this document.”

I haven’t translated anything, but I was wondering, surely ANTS is decentralised, and geography shouldn’t matter?
