That’s the one, very effective, and no pain.

Has anyone tried an electronic repellant? Killing free. From what I can tell there are a slew of Chinese products cheaply available that are as ineffective as their price suggests. However, this may be worth a try before sentencing mice to death

We used electric/sonic repellents in UK and talked about them on a previous SF thread some years ago… they worked very, very well.
we brought them to France… and they’re still working in the cave :crossed_fingers:

Where do the mice go?

Back in UK we had a real problem… so OH placed some sonic thingies in various areas…
One night I heard a frantic scrabbling/scratching outside our bedroom and went to investigate.

A mouse was in the hallway, trying dig through the carpet, presumably to escape the sonic noise (which I couldn’t hear).
I don’t know how it had got in, perhaps it had been hiding in the loft…
but here it was totally disorientated/frantic and took no notice of me…
Being a crafty/courageous female I quietly opened the door to the outside and as soon as the mouse scented the fresh air/breeze it ran as off into the night, as fast as its little legs would take it…

It possibly passed the word…

EDIT to answer David’s question properly… the mice go where they can go without being assaulted by the sonic… and we find they don’t like being near 'em and would rather stay well away… like outdoors

I would be concerned about the effect on our dog (even though he’s going deaf). Vita (our late Airedale) when she was going deaf found some sounds excruciating and would be climbing the wall.

I was just wondering because I have often heard people say that the sonics don’t work at all, and I do have a vague memory of many years ago trying them myself, and they were completely ignored.

I can’t get my head round where they go, Having been told that captured mice with humane traps must be released kms rather than metres away outside because of their excellent homing instincts, do they not simply find other ways to enter the property, perhaps in an area a little further away from the sonics?

Or do they go next door perhaps, and you, not being your usual helpful and community minded self, keep the sonics a secret? Go on, you can tell us, nobody reads this rubbish anyway. :joy:

Edit: PS, yes @SuePJ , I think you might have a point there. :slightly_frowning_face:

A few months ago I could hear some rodent-like noises in the wall, so I plugged in a sonic gadget in the bedroom and I haven’t heard the mousy noises since.

Whether that’s because they were repelled, or because it’s now summer they no longer want to lurk in the house, I don’t know. But I’m leaving it plugged in!

we placed sonic thingies on the back terrace to deter cats… didn’t worry birds, hedgehogs, toads etc but it did stop the cats… if they passed by and triggered 'em…
after a while we didn’t bother to switch 'em on and it seemed that the cats remembered that our place was “not welcoming” (not to them anyway… )

That just confirms to me, not to be used in a house with cats or dogs as the sound may distress them.

We used to have them in our old house, they didn’t bother the cats or dog, or the mice TBH🙄

Not normally a problem, different frequency for rodents. Not all of these things work but some do. I had a call a few years back as someone had bought an ultrasound fox version and that was upsetting dogs and cats.

Distress is only when/if they can’t get away… the sonic only emits when the cat “crosses” the movement detector… and by simply stepping back or away, the sonic switches off… it’s not sending sonic waves (whatever) all the time…

It’s a little bit like an electric fence, just gives a little zing but doesn’t injure… and is tuned to the “cat frequency”

they are battery operated and the batteries last for years now that the cats know to avoid that area…

But if we have visitors with pets, we simply mask the detectors … then everyone can relax.

In that area, the wildlife have priority… and we do our best to protect them from predators

As at present we still live in Australia we only visit once a year. I keep all our bed linen, towels and clothing in plastic boxes. I also put a tumble dryer sheet in the box which seems to help keep everything smell fresher and nothing ends up smelling of plastic.

Interesting thought. At the moment I wash linen before it goes away in the cupboard (obviously) but then have to wash it again at the beginning of the season the following year because in the intervening months the linen has acquired a musty smell.

I have hoarding tendancies I’m afraid. I guess on the presumption that “this stuff will surely come in” one of these days.

And just like your aunt, we discovered, long after his wife died, that my uncle (known as an inveterate collector) had been storing all his newspapers ever, glass jars, years of railway tickets, books containing lists of car number plates - he noted them down in a little book when he went out and about ! Cardboard boxes, you name it, in rooms of the house. My mum persuaded him to get rid of it and he ended up taking it all to the tip via multiple bus journeys ! Like you say, it must run in the family genes…

I’m trying self-help. I’m currently in the process of getting rid of lots of old papers - mostly kept since we moved to France. I regularly try to tidy out the wardrobe and give clothes to Emmaus. We also donated unwanted books to Phoenix - the dog rescue people. It’s very nice to regain space.

I use those vacuum storage bags, the vacuum can degrade over several months but very little else gets in but a whiff of air.

Been there, done that, got the T-shirt. Yours are obviously better quality than mine as the mice have been steadily chewing their way through the fabric they are made from.

I also put one in the vacuum cleaner bag as since we have a dog the exhaust air can be a bit “doggy”. I don’t like artificial perfume smells but the two smells seem to end up as neutral.
