How to get rid of ants

first, find the nest… then depending… I sweep up the eggs and tip 'em into undergrowth on the outskirts of the village… or I use boiling water (not often )

I think there are products you can buy that you put on an ant trail, they take some of the ‘stuff’ back to the nest and it kills them at source. A friend gave me a small tube of ‘stuff’, put a couple of drops down yesterday and haven’t seen any ants today…………so far. Not sure if the ‘stuff’ I have deters or kills but they seem to have gone.

I used this once at our MS in Deux-Sevres and it worked very quickly and completely. It was just a little tube of clear liquid and it said to just put down a few drops. Not sure if it killed them or not, but I can say we had no more ants for about 4 years.

Do you know what it is?

Here you go

Do you know where it is from?

Sorry no idea where my friend got it from but I see it’s available on amazon, but maybe try your local diy store

I think your friend must have bought that quite a few years ago because that version of the product contains the insecticide Fipronil which is now banned in the EU. The new version can be found on Amazon.

I wonder if @Rob_le_Pest knows of an effective solution.

Thanks!

as @Panache says, Fipronil had been banned from sales from March 2024, but if you still have it in stock you can use it until September 2024. It’s a neonicotineoid, but in the quantities used for cockroaches or ants, it poses zero risk if used correctly. @letsmile anybody selling Fipronil on Amazon is breaking european laws.

There are a lot of ants about this year. I find the most effective treatment is diatomaceous earth (terre de diatomée). It’s natural to boot.

If one has a nest behing the plasterboard then one can inject with a permethryn based insecticide liquid or powder are both good in this instance.

I personally would use diatomaceout earth.

We were having issues when we arrived, noted the routes they liked and tried the cheap ant treatment in little round tin traps from Action for v little money and so far working like a charm, no more ants.

How does the Fipronil actually deal with the ants? Does it indeed go back to the nest with the ones that take it, and kill off the nest? Seems to have worked wonders so far :crossed_fingers:

Fipronil gel is a formula MC (micro capsules) 25, or 30g cartouches Think of a paintball (billes) full of insecticide. Then put 100,000 on a teaspoon that’s micro capsules, ants and cockroaches will take the billes back to the nest, so not a lot goes a long way.

Great stuff, if it’s too good to be true, they ban it

Ok so that explains, as I expected, why I haven’t seen anymore ants :+1: long may it continue :+1:

How would you use that ? We don’t often have ants in the house, but have loads outside. If they stay outside I’m happy to leave them alone, but inside is a no no.

The most effective way I’ve found to get rid of ANTS is to send them a request to do something, you won’t hear from them for weeks :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

@hairbear get a blusher brush and apply ‘forensically’ along where they are marching, don’t apply blobs of the stuff, just a fine dusting will suffice.

Diatomaceous earth (DE) is 100% natural and 100% effective to 100% insects. The fine dust gets trapped between the exoskeletal platelets, so the insects meet their demise by dehydration.

It’s not a quick knockdown like pyrethroids, so you wouldn’t use it for a wasp nests, but is perfect for fleas, ants, cockroaches and bed bugs.
