Also the impact of traditional Chinese medicine on endangered species like rhino and tigers
Yes, but apart from that, what has China ever done for us?
NC has particular reasons for doing so. I doubt you will find many here that admire America for itâs gun culture, rendition of foreign nationals and profligate waste. However the UK doesnât disappear itâs nationals, and whether you like the politics or not, it is very far from Chinaâs behaviour in the 21st century (earlier times maybe not so much).
As much as anything, if my understanding is correct, you could be completely apolitical and yet still be taken into custody on suspicion of something. Possibly because you were apparently not engaged and therefore hiding a more serious crime.
Does the invention of paper outweigh the invention of gunpowder?
So on balance probably not China. Donât want to start a bitter thread, more a lighthearted look into other destinations.
Sometimes I read of a new exhibition opening or a play or just remember the joys of wandering along the Konigstrasse and blossom bedecked side roads to the Chelsea Physic Garden on a spring afternoon âŚ. And just for a moment I think, wouldnât that be nice.
Then I look across the sunny garden basking in 24C under a peerless blue sky and think, apero hour soonâŚ
No torture here in la belle sud, by any means!
Peeing it down here in the Loire
So too in London
Mild and sunny in Bicester today.
We lived in the Peloponnese, Greece for 13 years before coming to France 10 years ago. Curently on a months holiday back in the Peloponnese and itâs as if nothing has changed.
Can still get a three course meal plus a beer for 15 euro, a giros for 2 euro etc.
Miss so much of it especially the unspoilt coast line. Just wish we were younger.
Being that bit younger is what prompted the thread, we love where we are (holidaying in the Loire) but wondered long term where else might be good for a permanent move, especially if the socialist Frexit and move to the right.
Thatâs good to hear. I looked at houses around Stoupa online, and was a little horrified to see what appeared to be dozens of tourist houses spread across the landscape. It made me very concerned for the local environment and society.
Yes Stoupa area is growing fast . I find the area a bit far, road is horrible in the winter and too busy
in the summer.
Much prefer location just a bit west of Kalamata
Austria for us - the scenery is stunning, we can both speak the language and we have many Austrian friends.
Montenegro would be a possibility for me.
Italy. If it wasnât for family ties keeping me close to the channel, Iâd probably be living there. Not that I donât love France, I just love Italy that little bit better!
I think Croatiaâs a more stable option, though I like that whole Dalmatian coast.
First sailed down it on a ferry from Rijeka in 1969, gliding in and out of the islands at night. Last saw it returning to Paris from a philosophy conference in Dubrovnik, when my wife and I were two of the three passengers on board. The pilot needed to use a lot of fuel so took us on an extended low level tour of the whole coast, then a detour over Venice.
Both very special.
A friend hired a boat and sailed the Dalmation isles and likewise thought it absolutely beautiful. Went to negociate on a house and the price just kept climbing so they walked away.
