Monobloc heat/aircon

I fitted a monoblock air/air unit about three months ago, to heat our previously unheated large landing & upstairs corridor. It’s a bit of an experiment to see what the noise was like, what with having all the bits inside.

We’ve just had nearly a week of subzero mornings & evenings - minus 6°C at one point. I’ve programmed the unit to run from 07.00 to 10.00 & 16.00-23.00 i.e. during colder bits of the day. I can report that it still works well during those minus temperatures & the warmer landing means that any unused/unheated bedrooms don’t get as cold as they used to.

The heater is set to 20°C but a more accurate separate thermometer tells me that it shuts down about 18°C, which is plenty for what we want. Clearly I could get more heat out of it.

In brief, yes they do work. Ours is a Klimea 9HP Mini. The jury is out as to whether we’d want the noise in a living room…

When he finishes he won’t have any trouble finding a job.

Best for installers but I beg to differ for customers, Daikin would be first choice as you can always get spares where Mitsubishi stop making them after a while.

Don’t they have to make spares for seven years from first sale of the model now ?

Yes I believe under EU ruling they do but 7 years is not long. By comparrison we obtained a new control circuit board for a 12 year old Daikin without issue but a Mitsubishi unit was kept going by my contractor using his hoard of 2nd hand spares as Mitsubishi refused to make more spares available and that was for a large number of commercial customers. They are building a bit of a reputation for this I am told.

This sort of advice is why being a member of SF is golden - there’s always someone on here who’s “been there, done that!” or has specialist knowledge. Chapeau!

Agreed that’s the kind of detail you can’t get on the internet, so thanks a lot. One surprising thing that we have learnt after living in this house for nearly two years is the difference in outside temperature according to where you are. The west wall is relatively cold in winter and hot in summer the east the opposite. So the position for our first monobloc would be the east wall of our bedroom as noise doesn’t bother me and my OH is hard of hearing.

Now it’s a minimum of 24 in the morning we have little chance of cooling the house down so I think it’s time we invested in some monobloc climatiseurs. I see that Leroy Merlin stock both the makes mentioned in this thread Qlima and Klimea. Did you make a decision to get some Nigel? The problem is there is such a large choice it’s difficult to know which one to go for and how much to spend

I would consider where you are and were the servicing agents are, no point in getting stuck with something the locals cant fix.
Who actually makes the compressor etc.

Don’t know if it’s any help, but our air to air heat pumps were supplied and maintained by Bousquet who are near Leclerc (on the D840 between Figeac and Capdenac). The system was already installed when we bought the house twelve years ago and we’ve never had any problems - it’s very effective

Long may it continue that way. The internal heat exchangers need a good clean from time to time and if they have an uphill condensate route those little condensate pumps dont tend to last long.

I must admit I had assumed that very little servicing was needed. Is it the kind of servicing that could be done by a plumber?

I would certainly ask a few before you purchase any as they (monoblocs) have a DIY ‘tag’ meaning that many plumbers will not want to get involved. It is for this reason that I went for an external pump/internal cassette Atlantic marque.

Thats normally the case with these units both mono and mini splits. Efficiency can drop off if the radiator fins get clogged with dirt pollen etc so cleaning is necessary.
If possible look for variable speed inverter drive models.

We bought a Klimea monobloc from Leroy Merlin towards the end of last year. It’s around 2,5kW heat output, draws about 700w off the mains at full chat. We’ve only just started using the cooling function properly in the recent hot weather & it’s proved very effective at keeping our large & high landing, corridor & main bedroom at a sane level. We keep the other three bedrooms closed up so its not trying to cool too much volume.

With a bit of pragmatic programming I get it to run almost entirely from our solar PV, so its not costing anything to run. I can automate that function by controlling it from our Eddi power diverter, but I’ve not got around to that yet.

Not sure ours has a pump ? The pipe coming out has a small downhill gradient and so I assumed it was gravity drained, but we do get drops from the louvre if it’s humid. I’ll check it as I have the service manual.

Absolutely. Ours has a cleaning cycle that lasts about 1 hour specifically to deal with this. You have to do it quite regularly even though there are air filters on the inlet and outlet. It’s also a good idea to thoroughly clean the filters and run the unit just on fan for several hours before then doing a clean cycle before first use in the summer.
