I lived in Germany for 26 years so know the roads fairly well. The route I suggested was partly to get off the autobahn and enjoy some of rural Germany to make the trip more interesting. I actually spent some time around the Bodensee last summer. The traffic was a lot freer flowing in Germany than it was in Switzerland.
Once when attending an exhibition in Nürnberg, my then boss, another colleague and myself went to the same bar we were in the night before.
Much to our amazement my boss offered to buy the first round, a very rare event, and ordered “drei Tücher bitte”. The barman was just about to correct my boss when he saw my smiling nod. Arrived on a try were 3 towels.
He should have said “drei Tucher bitte”. Tucher being the local beir.
Yeah, let’s not get on to driving in Switzerland, it would be “rant mode on”
But for the Umlaut, the beer was lost
Yes and a rosti is the low calories version of a rösti.
What’s wrong with driving in CH? CH was home up to a few years ago.
My issue last year south of Bodensee was that I chose a bad route. Setting out on a 150 km leg where there are more 20 and 30kmh limits than 50 and 70 is going to be your maximum for the next six hours or so was tiring. The trip back later that day through Germany was lovely. Switzerland is like any other country, it has some great driving roads and drivers and some awful. I don’t like commenting on the nationals of any country as having a typical strength or weakness but I do know that as a motorcyclist France is a much nicer place to ride in traffic in than Germany.
The number of speed limited sections and the roadworks? Driving from Geneva to Bregenz tested my patience to the extreme !
I used to drive to Oftringen for work from St. Etienne - OMG
Roadworks are continuous improvement, do come to an end and you get very smooth roads.
I traveled most time by train, reliable goes most places if not the buses and trams are clean and safe. Most residents have at least halbe tax so the prices are affordable.
Speeding is taken very seriously as a Swede found out, he was banned for 5-years and a CHF 1.2m fine (serious fines are linked to nett worth) and a German who did 160km in the Gotthard got free accommodation along with a fine and saying good bye to his car.
The Bregenz crossing is not good, my usual one in Rheinfelden and avoid Zürich.
The Berlin Umwelt sticker can be ordered online €5.95 and is posted out very quickly. Website for application, in English, HERE
It is regularly posted on forums that most car dealers in Germany will issue a stcker for any make of car at the base rate
It not a route I would use as I was never transiting. That top part of CH does not have lateral highways, most are radial from places like Bern, Zürich etc. Best avoid any Swiss road to Konstanz on a Saturday; too many people going shopping in Germany and playing the Mwst trick.
Canton Jura has the reputation for worst drivers and not all drivers of CH registered cars are Swiss given the high migrant working population.
Would that be valid in Munich?
Make sure you stick it in the right place.
An Umwelt sticker is an Umwelt sticker. As long as it’s the right colour it will be valid in whichever German city demands them.
Thank the great Lord Fark that it isn’t per city
What struggles have you had at the Bregenz border stop? from Zurich / St Gallen would Rheinfelden not be the default border crossing?
Btw I too would avoid going along that side of tbe Bodensee - it can take forever - unless my destination was a town actually on the lake forcing me round the lake.
Sheer volume of traffic and that obviously depends on what time of day. All most every time I went through I was stopped by the Grenzwacht.
My defaults were Bregenz for München and Eastern Germany, Rheinfelden for the Western Germany and France. I avoided Basel.
OK the trip is on - out via Eurotunnel Monday AM, stop in Saint Quentin (maybe not the most exciting place but the timings and distances work out), aim to be in Munich by Tuesday PM, conference Wed-Sat AM, back through Germany stopping overnight in Cologne and hopefully back to the UK Sunday PM.
Enjoy. Gute Fahrt.
That will depend how many beans I consume along the way
Try a Currywurst or two.
