For years we had serious lime scaling of the kettles, shower and loo… I built a new kitchen and installed the cartridge filter system, the difference was immediate for the kettle, so installed a second unit for the rest of the house. still have scale build u, but probably 25% of what it was, the shower screen and head stay clean for weeks, not 4 days.
Well, I have lived in Paris, Burgundy , Lot and Correze and never had a single problem ever with the tap water - ad I live with a total health nut!
Sounds like you’ve got it just right for your situation…
We get no lime scaling here… so we are lucky.
Lovely water here in Burgundy and I have heard that whilst hard water does not do too well for kettles it is much better for your heart.
Also traces of plastic have been found in the stomachs of those who only drink the bottles stuff.
No thanks!
Absolutely right and stunningly from the Land that produces 300 recognisably different artisanale beers - in the years I lived in Belgium and under guidance from experts I did a full-time study course of as many as possible!
Amazing when you think of that 300 figure - in a country that takes about two hours of motoring to cross! Even now I can’t drink beer of 4% such as the usual stuff dished up in English pubs, but never having drunk cats piss, I bow to Peter’s greater judgement.
I now enjoy the Black Label 7.9% beer from Lidl. Good taste and good price.
Haha. That takes me back 50 odd years…
Manchester City got to Wembley and I agreed to drive my Dad, my eldest brother and his BIL from Manchester to watch the match (I wasn’t interested in football - a game for nancies lol).
I said I would pick them up after the match saying I would find a pub for some lunch. I recall my dad saying “don’t you go drinking that southern beer son, it’s like knat’s piss!”
I had a terrible hangover from drinking Wilsons many moons ago.
I have been drinking bottled water for years and this is due to the fact that our water tastes like chlorininated s**t.
I used a Brita Filter and jug and was not satisfied with the resulting taste at all.
So I costed the Epic Water Filter and Jug against the cost of bottled water and it came out preferable to say the least. The water tastes very good (the independent reviews were also very good) and is lovely cold from the fridge and I am not adding 2 2litre empty bottles to the recycling bag each day.
It does make lovely tea also.

That is brilliant, I had forgotten that one
You made my day
Goudale Ambre is nice and strong, also it’s French.
I’m terrible with fizzy water, I love it and drink probably 2 litres / day (in the evening mixed with white wine!!! I keep looking at the Soda Streams but again - big American company etc - would rather find a smaller / EU company but it isn’t easy. Also cost / litre is a factor for me and Lidls fizzy comes out cheaper than with the SS! Maybe I should look into it as as a family we produce a huge amount of waste!
I was taught at uni that for an average adult in cool climate you should have 1.5L / day, to bed added to in cases of heat / size / exercise / drinking alcohol / coffee. I get very cranky and can also get a head ache when I’ve not drunk enough (water I mean - although not enough wine can make me cranky too
).
Hi Tory, I’ve read more recently that this is a myth. Interesting article from the BBC here. You don’t have to actually drink that quantity of pure water as you can include the water contained in food and other drinks (coffee etc is not as dehydrating as you would expect). If you feel better drinking lots of water though that’s great.
Take care

No, you don’t - any source of water, including “metabolic water” (the water that comes from breaking down carbohydrates into carbon dioxide and water) counts.
The classic “physiology textbook” figure for an adult is 40ml per kg of bodyweight assuming “normal” ambient temperature and no fever, or 2.8l/24 hours.
But it can get a bit complicated
That seems quite high… for 75kg weight that amounts to 3 lts of water. My nephrologist is recommending about ⅔rds that with an elimination rate of about 1½ lts/24 hours. Drinking 2+ lts/day water sent my weight rocketing and caused œdema in my legs/ankles… cutting down to ½ ltr/day in hospital (under controlled conditions) saw my weight fall by 10kg over a period of 11 days so as you say, it can be a bit complicated.
Weight now seems stable at 75kg with 1¾ lts/day (representing about 2.6ml per kg)
I think you summed it up when you talk about a nephrologist. Obviously you do have issues with your kidney function
Exactly - it is where the “famous” 3 litres a day comes from.
I think Eddie hits the nail on the head - the 40ml figure assumes normal renal function - if you have dodgy kidneys you might need more, or less, depending on how they handle the fluid balance part of the equation.
“Normal” (back to the physiology text book again) urine output is ~ 1ml/kg/hr (so ~ 1500-1700ml per 24 hours for a 70kg individual). If you have renal disease you might pee more or less than this, and might have kidneys which can’t change their output very much depending on your state of hydration so you have to watch fluid balance much more carefully.
Spot on Eddie… and heart issues too although those appear to have been addressed well with a pacemaker and Entresto medications.
My issue now is creating a flag system in a spreadsheet which alerts me to any possible impending issues… at present I am simply flagging where the intake exceeds the output but I think it can be more scientificially based than that… perhaps where the input exceeds 2.66 x the average weight over the period of a month…
or is it better to measure output so flag if (1mlx75kgx24) < 1800
Funny that you’ve revived this old discussion Stella now. We used to drop off yet car fulls of 1.5 lt plastic Evian/Volvic/Whatever bottles at the recycling on our way to Carrefour. We found the waste distasteful (pun intended) so when we spotted a Brita filtered jug we bought it to try. Three weeks in we’re sold on it. No more still water in plastic bottles for us. Saves a lot on storage space as well.
I drink tap water, luckily here it tastes fine - my great grandmother drank contrex which I found completely disgusting.
