If not a leak then why does it need re gasing?

Mercedes has a good customer service and I would contact the company, because they can give you the best answer or can point you to some contacts of old timer clubs, that probably had this problem before and will be able to provide the best advise.

Maybe the compressor clutch has failed. With the engine running get someone to switch the a/c on and off and listen (under the bonnet) for a click from the compressor. On some vehicles the clutch unit can be seen and the movement will be obvious.
