Processionary caterpillars 2024

It works well for box caterpillars but I don’t know about the pine processionary ones.

It may be effective, this is interesting:

There are different specific sub-strains for different pests, but I wouldn’t like to say whether what is supplied here in France is a generic strain.

I can vouch for it’s efficacity. When my parasol pine and Pinus wallichii were small enough to spray, I treated them. Caterpillars were dead within a few hours. It’s also effective on tortrix moth, olive and feijoa caterpillars. Reputed to reduce sciarid fly infestation in pot plants, but that was less successful.
The big advantages are it’s preventative usefulness and that it’s harmless to other insects, wildlife and humans!

Only use with caution and in accordance with the instructions… eg:

Ah, that’s excellent news if true. I wondered why the density of the magpie population around the house seemed to have increased over the past few years - maybe the “improved” food supply is the reason !

It is rather alarming for pets!

I found this, seems good advice to spray caterpillars with hairspray before any attempt to sweep up

And perhaps a wash & blow dry?

Always fancied a beehive myself !

I am sure it is possible- you just need to ask at the coiffeur.

Sadly not possible with my barnet.

I suppose a wig would do the same job ?

Went for a walk day before yesterday, somewhere very local but hadn’t been there before. Found these everywhere.

It’s a small pine forest with perhaps several hundred trees, and just about every one is covered in the nests. There are possibly several thousand nests. Surely this is the sort of thing that should be dealt with, but it’s very popular with walkers, especially dog walkers. Nothing seems to have been done.

Do you know which commune? Worth talking to mairie about it.

Yes, it’s the neighbouring commune. May be sensible to see what they say.

It’s like something out if Alien. I’d talk to someone alright.

If your skin is open, even a scratch, keep covered. An acquaintance needed a trip to urgences!
