Unfortunately taking our time isn’t an option, we’re in competition with around 400 other crews and running to set times.
Ah… sorry I’d missed that bit…
ah well… enjoy yourselves and we can hear all about it later…
Seems like you’d be better forking out for snow tires rather than socks
We’re using a new set of 6 Vredestein winter tyres (basically mud & snow tyres). We only have space for two spare wheels although our back-up car will be carrying some Finnish tyres as a reserve.
What we start with in Glasgow on Jan 31 has basically got to do us for the event finishing on Feb 7, and then the drive back to Scotland, where the Volvo is garaged.
We then drive our Skoda road car back home to Charente Maritime.
A great way to start 2024
The socks question was to ascertain their suitability for the alpine roads plus whether they met legal requirements.
The alternatives were chains (which no-one recommends) or studs (which many recommend) but they are expensive; useless on dry roads and after the Monte surplus to requirements with little value.
Aaaa the Volkswagen Beetle supersport place
And if you’re lucky, you might find that they serve risotto ai funghi Porschini…
Visited there back on the 1972 Monte - co-driving for the team manager of a Swedish Saab team.
Ove Andersson
Ahhh
Thanks - Glad someone got it!
Nils Andreasson - he was a family friend and ran a secondary factory team. I did two Montes with him
I don’t think anyone has posted the interactive official map yet, so here’s a link
Well done… and I vaguely remembered from last year… if you’ve got the correct winter tyres which conform to the required standards… you don’t need chains, socks, whips or anything else
Pleased to see that clearly confirmed.
The snow socks quest is now fast becoming superfluous
My car’s insurers, Hagerty, seemingly decided in the summer to stop offering competition cover outside of the uk. They told me in June they did and there was no problem- but later changed their mind, and haven’t told the customers.
I’ve spent the last month trying to get the green card required for the Monte entry and have only now been told it’s ‘non’
I have until the end of the month to find another insurer. It’s a small market and being French resident is an added complication!
This was my experience of winter tyres too. On in October, off in March when County Durham was reliably above 7degC. Even factoring in the cost of steel wheels, it didn’t seem extravagant.
Ahh, that’s a bummer. Good luck with your search. Are any of the clubs, single marque or whatever any help?
Unfortunately not. My insurer is one of the main ones in the market and living in France gets either No or we will have to consult our underwriters.
Who do the French teams use?
