A good application of AI

It seems that the O2 phone company in the UK has devised an AI entity to engage with phone scammers. I have no idea how it manages to get connected to the scamming calls, but this short video gives an overview:

As I understand it, the system just receives calls and, if it’s from a known scammer’s number, then it triggers Daisy to keep them busy.

I like the idea although I’m not sure how effective it will really be, as this is a huge business for the scammers involved. They have their own call centres running these scams, so it’ll only be a drop in the ocean - but if it helps prevent anybody from being a victim then I guess that’s a good thing.

The cynic in me thinks O2 is getting a lot of good publicity out of this… it would’ve been better if it was maybe being used unknowingly, so the scammers didn’t know to look out for signs of it being used.

We rarely get any scam calls these days but I did actually play this role myself. It was fun and my thinking was the same - rather 15-20 minutes wasted on me than a successful hit on someone more vulnerable.

I think everyone with time to spare should help this fight.

Oh, that’s the first time I’ve heard the full, unedited conversation. It needs a bit of tweaking.

Fun fact: I, too, like Daisy grew up in Malmesbury  (although she pronounced it differently to how us Malmesbury-folk say it… she’s lost her Wiltshire accent!)
