But at least its not identifying as a Porsche.
Which would actually be quite reasonable as it was designed by uncle Ferdinand
Racist!
Priceless.
Iâve been nibbling at The Oldie again.
An Oxford tutor spotted a huge crowd, spilling out of Blackwellâs bookshop in the city.
âWhatâs going on?â he said to an undergraduate at the edge of the crowd. The undergraduate explained that it was a book signing by Monica Lewinsky, the famous White House intern. The tutor replied, âOh, I thought it might have been a demonstrationâ. The excited undergraduate responded, âYou think sheâll give a demonstration?â
And this, talking about the brave women parachuted into France in the war as part of the SOE:
Thirty-nine women were recruited from all walks of life, from bankers to buskers. Stroud chose to focus on Krystyna Skarbek, âa lover of adventure and a lover of menâ; her husband described her as âthe most intrepid person I have ever met, woman or manâ. Krystyna set up a radio station and a newspaper, spoke Russian and drove men wild with lust. One man fell so deeply in love with her that, following a rejection of his advances, he exclaimed, âIâm going to castrate myself with my revolver,â and managed to shoot himself in the foot. Extremely angry, he threw himself into the river, not noticing it was frozen â and broke both legs.
Iâve seen the shop
Some years ago I became aware of a Merchant Navy forum populated mainly by old sailors.
The MN always had a healthy disrespect for the Grey Funnel Line (Royal Navy) but this thread about the recent collison of 2 Navy ships in the Gulf made me smile
"Why this happened is still to be established. We train our people to the highest standards and rigorously enforce machinery safety standards, but unfortunately incidents of this nature can still happen".
Yes, pull the other one. Accidents like this just donât happen they are caused by incompetence, lack of training and poor recruitment. Plus too many chiefs and not enough ******.
They didnât in the Merchant Navy.
They obviously didnât test astern when they had a bit of sea room.
Then this:
I suppose the RN has only two speeds, Full Ahead or Full Astern ( when it works).
Sounds a bit like SubLtânt Phillips," Left hand down a bit" ship handling and forgets to let go forward and aft so tows the pier out to sea, with an upset Wren a Chasten still stood on it.
And this, a touch of realism?:
It doesnât happen in the MN? That is rather promoting us too far. Tilapa was showing off in Golfito resulting in a double ring full ahead in order to avoid an undergarment nastiness with another company vessel. Approaching Bermuda (possible Bahamas, we werenât supposed to be going to either but had run short of available bunkers)
Then back to RN bashing:
Better you stay below the parapet on this one - it is rumoured that the cause of the failure to go ahead was a wiring fault which reversed the action of the controls, giving astern when ahead was selected. R/Os were fine but leckies were always suspect.
That was just a taste, well, it made me smile.
Fermented foods and drinks are good for you.
Was that in Gazza or Israel? Topical eh?
