When I saw Warren’s post I immediately thought of this cartoon.

The New York Times’s Well newsletter asked readers for the best advice they had received, or given, in 2022. Over 600 smart, witty responses flooded in — (plus one bonus tip: “Never fry bacon in the nude.”) Here are five of the best.

  • “When in a depressive episode, never make a major decision or change your hair. Wait until you’re feeling better. Then decide.” — J. Alex Sanger, Chicago

  • “The best advice I received was to photograph my parents doing everyday things because this is how I will want to remember them.” — Lori Gosselin, Seattle

  • “Never take criticism from someone you wouldn’t go to for advice.” — Leonard Foonimin, Falcon Heights, Minn.

  • “I was in a vintage shop with my friend Max and saw a sequined top. I remarked to him that I wouldn’t have anywhere to wear such a sparkly top in my current life but that I would love to. He replied simply, ‘Choose a different lifestyle.’ I’ve thought about these words every day since.” — Monica Tanouye, London

  • “Don’t sweat the petty stuff — and don’t pet the sweaty stuff.” — George Kahn, Potsdam, N.Y.

Reminds me of a Spike Milligan story (from memory) about how the battery were going to be addressed by the captain and the sergeant was getting the men ready “Now you 'orrible lot, the captain is going to talk to you about [squints at piece of paper] Keats. I bet not one of you has any idea what a keat is” .

Just a story Charley Mackesie tells about an experience in NY - two minutes long, I cut out the earlier stuff - which I found hilarious.

Malayalam and Telugu? ( Or one or neither ).

I think the second one is Tamil, @vero. The first one maybe Kannada, from south India?

My friend in Singapore is Tamil. Just waiting for her reply…

Same family ( Dravidian) as Telugu and Tamil (and Malayalam but it’s a more distant member :slightly_smiling_face:) I love the variety of of languages and scripts on the Indian subcontinent.

Me too! I’m just waiting for my friend Kala to get back to me on the linguistic identification. I think she may be consulting a third party!

Hindi and Tamil! From Sri Lanka with love :two_hearts:

Errr but neither of those is Hindi - Hindi is written in devanagari script* and has a characteristic line along the top. Sinhalese maybe?

Possibly. My friend Kala said Hindi but she’s Tamil, Singaporean born. She may not know but she sent me this to compensate because she knows I like nature
