AdBlue - is it a con?

Girl friend just called me in a panic ‘because I know about cars…’ - unfortunately though I am lost in an era where diesel was for tractors… :rofl:

Anyway, this morning her AdBlue light came on in her Qashqai. She stopped at a friendly station who poured in some of the stuff for her. But the light is still on. She called Nissan who told her to come straight in because if she leaves it, the car will not drive. Also told her to bring 150€…

I just cannot get there to take over and the chap at Nissan has frightened her so much that she dare not wait…

I remember from a past shaggy dog thread, there are few of you well versed on the subject, so question please? Is this a con? I can see the only reason to go to Nissan is to have a fault code deleted, yes? 150€???

I have a Duster with AdBlue.

If not filled up in good time, the AdBlue error message comes on and won’t go off until a garage check it out with their ‘case’.

I have also once had a problem where I filled it up before the warning came on, as I knew it would not be far off needing it (about every 12,000kms). Anyway, a few days later, the error message came on, and would not go away. It had to be reset at the garage.

So, I think that AdBlue vehicles can show an error message for no reason, but only a garage ‘case’ can fix it.

Fortunately, my resets have been done under guarantee.

Well, I have at least learned somethimg today - the stuff is squirted into the exhaust it seems… :joy:

Appears from t’internet that this is quite normal - Nissan likes to instil panic into its customers with much technical talk of checking sensors and injectors so that customer can continue enjoying the security that a Nissan provides. Oh yea! :rofl:

I rest my case: a con :rofl:

Buy your own ODB scanner and reset the codes yourself paid for in less than 1 visit to a main stealer.

Ah see, cant see it will do any harm left for a short while, its to get tailpipe emissions down. BIL had his light coming on for months and local garage changed a few things which did not stop the problemuntil another diagnosed it to a failed adblue pump.

I told her to wait a few days until I am back - but no, it is now the largest priority in her life! She thinks cars are the spawn of the devil and will believe anything that a garage tells her!

To be honest, I doubt it, at least for Renault/Dacia.

I am on a number of Renault/Dacia forums, and many have thought that if they ignore the warning nothing will happen. Unfortunately, a number of the posters on these forums reported that once the threshold/limit has been reached the vehicle loses most power and can only crawl along.

Yes thats what used to happen to BIL’s after a bit, just remembered.

Thats why they get exploited. At least EV’s have none of this voodoo.

With Nissan, so she has been told, the car will just not start once the threshold is reached!

Having read a bit more about the technology, maybe i am being harsh and maybe there is a problem.

She is reasonably happy now as a friend has volunteered to go with her to the dealer incase there is a problem on the way :laughing: :laughing:

Give the garages a few years. I’m sure they’ll come up with something: “ooh, look. Your electron count is dangerously low” or “your gamma beam emitter needs urgent recalibration”.

Be very careful if said by an Irishman pretending to be Scotish🤭

You have to put a minimum amount in to make the light go off if not done so fill it right up. You should have at least 500 miles before the car wont start.
