Bringing music gear from UK to France on holiday

I’m guessing that’s the expendable bass player :joy_cat::joy_cat:

:rofl::joy::rofl::joy::rofl::joy:

No bass, no band!

I’ve been thinking this over… and I really can’t see a problem.
Let’s face it… a family with kids coming for a 2 month visit… is bound to have games etc etc (aren’t they?)… and grownup kids have grownup toys  :+1:

You’d like to think that, but I’m really not sure. Musicians occupy that weird space, where work and hobby cross over in some people’s minds. It might depend on the customs officer!

I regularly take camera gear -a pro bag-full - laptop, building and motor tools, back and forth. Never been asked about any of it. If you happen to have the original - or even photocopies - of the original purchase receipts you are bombproof.

Photographers too. Artists, as well, maybe.

On a trip from UK, via FR to Italy, the [estate] car was loaded to the gills with artists materials and the roof rack was piled with canvases rolled up in a silage bag :grinning:

There was a good deal more than a hobby painter would be carrying. Indeed, the destination was an exhibition. No interest by any customs along the way. This sort of thing is of minimal interest to them.

Just for fun - all words, no pix v boring, here is the artist, all 6’ 1" in heels, talking to a pal of Picasso about the work.

That car had a whole gallery-full …

The three or four times I have crossed the Channel by car/van I have never disturbed the slumbers of the Douanes for a moment.

I’m gagging to get a set of digital drums here. They are so much more available and cheaper in UK … I need a bass amp, too. As always, I shall sashaye thru with a cheery wave.

Lurking in dusty piles of what will eventually be my sitting room are 3 electrics, an acoustic, a bass, two small amps and that Positive Grid ‘Spark’ gizmo.

I am struggling with ‘headstock decal syndrome’. That is to say, just because it says Gibson or Fender [in this case] doesn’t mean it’s the best guitar known to man. But it is a Fender Strat … I could sell it and buy three of the Sire ‘Larry Carlton’ range - one each of a S, T, and 335 style.

I used to have a TVR and 2 Citroen DS’s. Now a Peugeot 307. One gets over not having the deluxe items, after a while.

Once we get the place a bit more sorted I’ll be bringing some gear over, a couple of guitars, amp or 2, pedals etc. Not too much because we’ll only be here 4 weeks a year to begin with, but enough to play a little.

Fantastic! Thanks, Cap.

What funny emphasis.

Acoustic guitar, Strat, maybe a second electric guitar tuned for slide. It builds up so easily.

A couple of guitars sounds about right… one for each hand… and how about another, just as a spare…
I’d have thought no serious musician would consider just one guitar…

Being a serious musician… I do have 3 recorders… 1 original from my childhood and 2 from my daughter’s childhood… but I only play 'em one at a time…

I have a Yamaha Dtextreme 2s set. Bit long in the tooth now but great fun to play. Have you tried Thomson.de??

I used to play with sax players who each played two at a time!

I’ve seen that done: it’s a great trick.

I’ve also seen someone in an English bell tower ring two bells at the same time.

You mean Thomann - yes. They are stockist at good prices.

Yup. I have a '96 Strat Plus Deluxe - the one with Gold [neck] Silver [mid] Red [bridge] Lace pickups. I’ve had two plain vanilla Plus’s [Gold/Gold/Gold]. I had to keep selling these things, going broke

They are wonderful guitars, as you would expect from a guitar produced as Fender’s return to manufacturing after Leo bought the company back from CBS It was based on a spec ordered as a custom special by Jeff Beck but never taken up. My guitar guru, out in the desert in Mesquite, Arizona, reckons “When they stopped makin’ the Plus, they stopped makin’ guitars”

The 30 year old Ibanez Roadstar ll serves as the slide machine. Lots of reverb, lots of delay, lots of bottom end - just right for doing the ‘Paris, Texas’ sound track by Ry Cooder.

Roland Kirk did. Soprano + tenor or alto, can’t remember which. Jeepers! Four!

Yeah. I wrote that but my iPhone always thinks it knows better! :joy:

Nice! I play bass and have a couple of good ones. An Overwater Custom J and a Musicman Stingray with the extra pickup. That one’s wicked.

Good to know there are other musicians on here!

Doesn’t it tho’! I went looking for the make of those Larry Carlton models, arrived at Thomann’s - rows & rows of lovely Carlton models.

Awful creeping feeling of G.A.S. Get thee behind me, Debit Card ! Till I sell the Strat.
