Hi there - we have house in south west France and want to get broadband installed. Does anyone have any advice as to providers, pitfalls or things to check / look out for. Thanks in advance
Look at comparasion sites:
Edcom doesn’t seem to have an eligibility checker. Ariase does and it’s what I use…
Personally, I would avoid anything involving SFR. I switched to them, having fallen for their sales pitch, and had no phone or internet for 3 months despite them taking money from me - not all of which I managed to get back.
It’s useful to see which houses in the area already have the speed you want. Here, Bouygues seemed to be the main provider, and we went with them.
So far it’s been good. We’re just recovering from a large failure (in Mirebeau, IIRC) which took out BB for just under a day. Bouygues sent us messages via the app, offered a free 50Go (via 5G) to tide us over and resolved it around lunchtime. If you get the measure of a company by how they resolve problems, then Bouygues is impressive.
Bouygues have been excellent for us in 47.
The only thing I can fault them on is their documentation not making it clear that a messaging service would be enabled on the BBox for our landline phone which we had ported in from an old ligne fixe.
Caused a little confusion as people said they were leaving messages, but nothing was showing on the answering phone application on our cordless phone system.
Don’t touch Orange with a barge pole.
Always been fine for us.
They were always fine for me as well - until they weren’t.
We had a similar situation when setting up broadband in southwest France. We ended up going with Orange because they have pretty good coverage, especially in more rural areas, though it’s not the cheapest option. Free’s another good one if you’re looking for better deals, but the customer service isn’t always the best, so just be prepared for that. Make sure to double-check what kind of connection is available where you are—some places only offer ADSL, while others have fiber. Also, pay attention to contract lengths and cancellation fees before you sign up.
