Cost of glasses

I have had to order a new pair of varifocal glasses. Got them at Optic 2000 who we always use. I was horrified at the cost this time. Got new frames but they were only 139 euros. After my 200 reimbursement from mutuelle and 15 centimes from SS I will be writing a cheque for 680 euros tomorrow! I don’t recall ever paying anything like that before but I wasn’t writing the cheque back then. Is this a pretty normal cost these days?

Sounds expensive to me. My last varifocals cost me just over €100 a couple of years ago (after SS and mutuellereimbursements), and that included a second pair of varifocal sunglasses .
Did you get a prescription from your MT?

Sounds expensive to me too. Last month I renewed my specs, new frames, varifocals, anti scratch coating, blue light defence and photo-chromatic, 125€ and a second pair with the same details for 1€.

My wife and I have just obtained new varifocals from Goggles4U - €80 and €60 (my wife had reactolites). Totally satisfactory, as always. However, there is a hidden cost!! We receive an email from La Poste, advising that the duty is payable to the Douanes (packages arrive from Uxbridge) at the rate of €10 each, and that La Poste have added a further €2 handling charge. Fair enough, €12 each. But when paying La Poste online, they deduct €8 from each bill by way of a discount, making only €4 payable. Thanks, but WHY? Why are La Poste giving away the Douanes money? Can’t see the logic.

Total cost €125 or does that include contribution from mutuelle?

But what was overall cost before contributions from mutuelle?

Sorry, can’t remember- I was only interested in the bottom line.

Well I got the prescription from my ophthalmologist. Had to have new ones for driving especially as don’t feel totally 100% vision wise now while out in car. Oh well The lady in Optic explained all their material is now exclusively made in France which may well explain the cost! Will get a white stick next time! Imagine if I sat on them! I would never get over it!

At that price I’d be expecting bespoke occupational lenses rather than varifocals.

I bought a pair on Wednesday. All in they’re going to cost €540. The biggest part of that is the price of the lenses. With the top of the range lenses the quote was almost twice that. I think they’re a bit more than the last pair I got a few years ago but those were from a real bargain basement shop, this time I chose the frames that I wanted without looking at the price so I thought it was fair enough.

I collected mine today. Bottom line for my last pair + sunglasses 4 years ago was €100. This time is was €350. Price without mutuelle etc €550. The frames were €195, lenses (varifocals with coating)around €180 apiece.

Yes David. My lens were top of the range so I think that explains the cost. The were far and away the best progressive ones with no blurred patches when I looked sideways. Each lens was different prescription Didn’t want to have to move my head to see clearly sideways like my last pair. Thanks for reply. Makes me feel better…sort of…to write that cheque tomorrow

Not sure if this is still going, we had a pair of varifocals and a pair of reading glasses for €1 each, sure this is still available

With 100% santé if you have qualifying mutuelle

I just got 2 pairs as well from goggles4U blue light blockers and another pair vari with transitions £78.

For my last pair of progressives I opted for a much wider corridor than my previous pair, so far less distortion at the edges, but more expensive. I think they are Zeiss precision lenses and I recall that the difference between the narrowest and widest corridor was about €300.

They are the best lenses, did they use the new scanner, the half moon shaped one?

I offered my carte Vitale when purchasing my last pair of specs but it was refused. I heve the receipt and sent it to my mutuelle but they too have declined payment.
Seems I am having to fund my new glasses myself.
However despite both refusing remboursement I will be making a repeat purchase of €1.99 at Action.
