Somehow I appear to be using a location called “Tottenham” on my Express VPN. It does not seem to feature in their list of UK locations. It is not a problem. In fact I find it very reliable. Does anyone know why Express VPN does not seem to list it in the available UK locations and are there anymore locations like this?
Pimlico?
Knowing Tottenham, the locals probably nicked it.
There was a young lady from Tottenham,
Who had no manners, or else she’d forgotten 'em.
At tea at the vicar’s,
She tore off her knickers.
Because, she explained, she felt hot in 'em
No idea why your VPN is boycotting Tottenham but maybe they just moved a server from there to somewhere else but it kept the same IP address so your computer is still finding it?
Sir William Butcher will be along in a minute with a proper technical explanation.
I tried Pimlico but Express vpn didn’t recognise it. Perhaps it is region specific. Where are you?
Sorry Mik - I should’ve used an emoji - your post about Tottenham put me in mind of
I think the pertinent question is “Does it matter”?
On the contrary my VPN seems to like Tottenham. In fact it seems to work better than other locations. I was simply wondering why it is keeping it a secret. I tried DrM’s suggestion of Pimlico but it would not work for me.
Absolutely not. It is working well for me and may well be helpful for someone else when BBC et al start blocking some locations. I just wondered if I was missing out on some secret solution.
That would have triggered my sense of humour button. I sometimes get stuck in “serious” mode.
Spoilsport. I was saving my pithy comment ‘but that would need a passport’ for the end of the thread.
I won’t bother now.
Probably to hide from the relentless VPN detection bots of BBC iPlayr and Amazon or Nectar all of which don’t like VPN’s much.
Staying ahead of these is like whack a mole for VPN’s so I am sure their lists of active and selectable locations may not always be in sync.
I just got UK - Tottenham today. I noticed a little down arrow after clicking on the three dots and it opened up a list : Docklands, East London, London, Midlands…
Interesting.
Perhaps ExpressVPN is doing continuous dynamic switching across a cluster of locations. This could make it harder for it to be tracked as a VPN connection.
I’ve noticed that my NordVPN connection seems to be detected as being in different places by Google and the Guardian, changing every couple of days despite the connection staying open and the IP address detected at my end not changing. Not sure how this is achieved but I think it may be a way to defeat the blocks put in place by the BBC et al.
They have lots of servers in different places. When you sign in you are allocated a server at random.
That’s when you use the app. I have a router which I program with a specific server which I used to have to change every month or so when iPlayer detected it as being a VPN. I havent had to change it though in about 6 months which suggests they are doing something clever. I think that the fact that websites seem to say I’m in a different town/city every couple of days must have something to do with that.
