Hi all just had fibre-optic installed excellent getting up to 4.0 gbps download but I have a remote computer downstairs which I use for my TV via a Wi-Fi extender that plugs into house PowerPoint but all i am getting is 30 mbps download is there any way I can increase this thank in advance
If you can’t run a network cable, you might have more success with power line extenders which carry the signal over your house wiring.
What exactly are you using to get the signal downstairs?
This will be your problem.
Sounds like your Wi-Fi device is old and you need to get a new one or hard wire the computer
Hi all thanks for your replies I am using plug in extenders they maybe to old
The distance is to far to hard wire and would involve major work it’s not practical
I’ve had good results with TP-Link. They don’t reach the speeds your fibre delivers, however!
Install a Mesh wifi system (base station plugs into, or connects via Wifi to fibre router, and a repeater, which will allow cabled or wifi access for the computer (assuming computer has ethernet port) )?
Agree. A mesh network is the best option to connect your WiFi throughout your house without losing signal loss/deterioration. 6E should be sufficient but there is now 7E available in the U.S., however most existing technology and even newly released devices doesn’t support 7E yet.
Mesh is OK if you have no choice but introduces latency and can need a lot of repeaters depending on building topology.
Personally would always go for wired Ethernet backbone if I could.
In my house we have used a system called Unifi; its not cheap but has a fantastic coverage of WAP points hidden, all powered by Cat6 ( or 7 Now !)
so a POE system…it offers seamless networking across all access points and will connect to the closest one with no latency at all.
all powered by a POE hub. we also use the Unifi cameras, and door access; so as we still work in the UK 3 or 4 days a week then we can answer our doorbell, and open the door to the porch for parcels to be left.
They do sell some high powered WAP points for great coverage inside and outside.
but I agree with previous posters - youll need a network of Cat 7 cables run through the property first to provide the POE.
Cat6 will do this quite happily.
I have just installed a similar POE network with access points throughout our house - a great solution. I went for CAT6A as offering a sensible balance of performance 10Gbps v cost.
Unless installing such a network during a renovation this can be quite disruptive but certainly does give the best solution.
I’d even go so far as to say Cat 5e would be fine though I would not actually recommend it for new installation.
You only need Cat 6 if you want 10Gb Ethernet - 2.5GbE and even 5GbE will do 100m of Cat 5e; TBH Cat 5e will suffice for 10GbE over shorter runs of 20-30m or so which is usually plenty in a domestic setting.
