Orange is just the new brand name for France Telecom, though it has different operations, which don't always liaise perfectly with one another. Assuming that you're happy to stay with Orange/FT, rather than use a competitor like Free or SFR, it would probably initially be best to call the Orange English-speaking helpline on 0969 36 39 00. They should be able to tell you how to proceed. Unless you speak adequate French, this helpline is a distinct advantage for Orange, as I haven't heard that its competitors have a similar service.

Greetings - We have just returned to France and are going to live in a building where there is no telephone. We would like to have it installed and have Orange Internet connection as we already are mobile customers. What is the first step to take? I guess that we have to have a phone line brought from the street pole to the building, then to where we want our Livebox and telephone jack placed. Do we contact Orange and they deal with all that, or do we have to first contact France Telecom (I think that they are associated with Orange) and have the line and jack sorted first?

Thanks for all the suggestions and help (we live near Alès 30100).

Just be a bit cautious about which Restore you use. A complete restore from a full backup should set the entire machine back to the exact state it was in when it was backed up. The Windows "System Restore" is a fast, and often very useful, tool which restores the System settings and files to what they were. (It's often a great tool to unset the damage done by a virus infection, for example.) It doesn't, however, restore applications programs, such as Incredimail, or the files associated with applications, such as the message 'database'. Frequently, you need these files to be as up-to-date as possible although your Windows has gone funny, which is one of the reasons the System Restore only restores those items directly to do with Windows. Only a full restore from a backup will put everything back as it was, and it's then your problem to bring it back up to the current moment.

Jacqueline, I'm not a big fan of Incredimail at the best of times. A friend uses it and she's had some bizarre problems, some of which I've managed to solve. One of them was that all her old messages suddenly weren't visible, but the most recent could be seen. I'll try to look up how this was overcome and post it here.

Given that 2 of your accounts are on Gmail, you should be aware that nothing, apart from Spam messages, is ever lost from Gmail. Using the web interface (mail.google.com) you can search your entire history by any word or combination of words, including parts of message title and/or author and/or email address. This might help you get access to your urgent messages in the short term.

If you have a decent backup of your system, it should be possible to get back to the state your machine was in before Oct 17th, before you reinstalled this IncredimailPlus, but you may need to get some professional support. If at all possible, get someone who has good knowledge of Incredimail, but that could be easier said than done.

If you use Microsoft XP software then please read these two posts, it is very important that you do.

Do not ignore - your data demands that you don't

Excellent point Peter. All modern versions of Linux have a built in backup program , which will also allow you to backup to cloud storage like Amazon S3 or Dropbox. External disks and cloud storage all cost money, but you need to put a value on the data you would lose if your machine crashed - some of it could be invaluable.

I think I will right a blog post on just this very point in the not too distant future.

Folks - Please, please, do not neglect having an independent backup of your machine, whether it's a PC, Mac, or tablet. External disks are not at all expensive, and they're insurance you really need.

Unfortunately, modern computers are lunatically reliable, certainly compared with the sort that I started on back in '64. This gives people the idea that they will never break down, and, you know what, they actually do, though it's rare. It happened, just once, to my own machine, back in '89. One day, the machine just started making little tinkling noises, and it turned out that the hard disk was history. Was I glad that I'd taken the trouble to feed in 38(!) floppy disks into the machine every week. I bought a new hard disk & was up & running in a couple of days.

Compare that with the experience of a friend who, with no backup at all, had a minor problem on her machine, pressed the startup key that said "Recover System" and completely overwrote her perfectly good disk, losing everything.

Backups should be set to run to an external hard drive, preferably automatically. Time Machine on a Mac is brilliant, but you do have to set it up. PCs have lots of ways to do it, from free but a bit slow, such as ODIN, through to chargeable but fast, like Acronis True Image.

Have you downloaded any new progs recently? I have found a few times that Firefox causes multiple startups and have had to reinstall it. It may be the battery - try replacing it.

Hmm I’ve already tried that a friend had the same problem, & his Mac died on him.
Anyway bought an external hard drive yesterday & prayed for 3 hours till everything was copied on to it. Just hope it stays alive till the end of the year when buying a new one is in the budget
Thanks anyway James

Hi Jane

First thing to check is the power supply, check the power lead by shaking it around, see if the thing reboots, could just be a faulty cable. (Hopefully)

Is my Mac dying?

Over the last couple of weeks my old(ish) Mac keeps shutting down then restarting itself. This morning when cold it did it 5 times in half an hour before finally getting on the go.
this evening I was worried that it wasn’t even going to start up.

This Mac is an imac (desktop) & was bought in 2008, the air vents have been vacuumed regularly OH is very careful about these sort of things so it’s not a question of over heating.

Any ideas?

Thanks for that, Peter! I have spent several days trawling the internet for a correct solution. It is a bit bizarre! Was working fine until last week's "upgrade"! And, yes - Android!

Graham, Sorry, but my only suggestion is to email support@aldiko.com and give them as many details as possible. In particular, let them have the make & model of your device, as well as which version of Android (I assume it's Android) your tablet uses.

I having been using Aldiko book reader on a cheapy 7" tablet. Have loved the reading experience - until last week when, following an upgrade, Adobe DRM refuses to allow me to read books I have bought and paid for. Adobe DRM invites me to log-in and then messages that the device is authorised. But still refuses me access. Any ideas from you experts? The Aldiko web site is singularly unhelpful!

Oh Rooby-Rooby-Roo! Must be Android auto-correct…

@Ian. Scooby rather than Scobby ? Scooby Do = Clue

"where you really don't have a scobby what is being said"

Don't have a what?

Google found the only dictionary definition of scobby was "chaffinch". Google Translate thought the language was Czech but couldn't translate it. It must be Geordie, hinny.
