Seriously Brian and Dorothy I wouldn’t panic at all. Something highly visible like this was sure to happen sooner or later and I’m sure it will be repaired and forgotten about in double quick time. Though there maybe a risk of a code fork if vendors produce their own quick fixes. For me, who has been advocating Linux since 2000, the good news it’s widespread adoption this bug has highlighted.
Very good Vic :)
No worries Brian - was probably hot and bothered and fed up of refereeing another thread xx
Catherine, We have a man at our local garage wot dispenses gas bottles. He’s very reliable, never breaks down.
A gas bottle machine is a machine wot dispenses gas bottles. Or at least, it is meant to...
Personally, after nearly forty years in IT I wouldn’t worry about it at all Brian. All software has bugs
Stuart, I have a mid 2011 top of the range 27 inch iMac and I am delighted with it. Incredible speed and a joy to use. My only suggestion is that you max out the specification on memory and disk.
Perhaps Nick's at work and a bit too busy for a lengthy reply Brian :)
Now play nicely children - I have just spent 53 minutes waiting for the gas bottle machine to work so I am not a happy bunny - nuff said! ....
I'll try here. Will this be a joy to use and better than a similar spec PC for photo editing, music, film etc?

Yes I have been looking at that Openssl bug, it certainly needs patching on servers running version 1.0.1 and 1.0.2beta.
If you have a server that uses Openssl, then you must take action on this reported bug.
Try doing some reading on organised crime and hacking, phishing and other security issues. I suspect we ain't seen nothin' yet :-(
Welcome Diane to the group. I noticed your tip on getting access to iplayer. If you would like to post it here on the forum I'm sure other members would be very interested.
Cheers Nick
Here is a great new device from Google for projecting films, pictures and the web onto your TV. They have been selling extremely well in the US, and are now available in Europe. They are v. inexpensive , so might be worth checking them out.
Thanks Dorothy they are all good links. I did see this one from Vaughan-Nichols which suggests most of these exploits have been aimed at routers , that have not changed their default passwords. If true, it really does beggar belief.
Having checked the evidence, seems very sketchy at the moment. Trojans do exist for Unix servers, but things like rkhunter should be installed to root them out.
I would run the checks on your servers Brian, and install rkhunter to see if all is ok. The best test is always to check the ports the server is doing work on, and if there are any your not happy with , shut them down with your firewall.
Our machines are under constant attack, I noticed another zero day on Windows 7/8 the other day - it really is turning into a war of attrition, and people really do need to start taking notice.
It's all horses for courses Nick. Linux for servers, Mac OS for users and Windoz for the bin. BTW last Mac OS version upgrade was FREE :-)
Some Friday Fun ;-) As we have bee talking about different operating systems to replace XP this week , I came across this set of funny picture describing the differences. I hope you laugh as much as I did at some of them.
Excellent news guys - can you put them on a Dropbox (or similar) share for me , and I will get building an image that others can use. I guess after April 8th MS are not going to care about licensing as the product is dead - but I will talk to my friends in Redmond to find out.
Let me know by PM where you have put the ISO files and I will grab them and the license key from there.
Look forward to a tutorial on build an XP virtual machine with Virutalbox ;-)
Yes Nick, I have one!
@ Nick, I have Home and Pro in English but they are both Dell OEM licences
Does anyone here on the forums have a Windows XP CD and license I can borrow to build a virtual machine for members. The thought being if I can show people how to do this, then they can keep their XP running - non-internet connected for security - and run it on another supported operating system, so they don't have to lose what they like. This will give everyone time to migrate off the old system and onto a new one , when they are happy with the new system. This will work on all platforms - so it offers great flexibility.
I haven't used Microsoft for a long time so I don't have any copies lying about, but this could be very useful to some members.
If you are a Google Chrome browser user, and also use Google Now on your Android or Apple device, then the notification center has been released with the latest stable release. Here is a quick article about it, and if you upgrade to the new release you will see a new notification icon appear on your task bar.
