Anyone know Soulac???
I’ve been following this saga for years…
Yes, I live not far from Soulac. It’s a lovely town… very popular with the Bordelais though who’ve caused the house prices to rocket. The architecture is lovely… in a way it reminds me of properties in Arcachon.
If I could afford to, I’d happily buy a house there - however it’s known as one of the first towns in France that will be totally submerged due to climate change (the Medoc region is only habitable thanks to the Dutch who drained the area in the mid-17th Century).
If you’re ever in the area, then I recommend visiting “les Arros”, natural swimming pools that were built in the 1840s. Oh, and it’s also very close to Le Verdon where you can catch a boat to visit the amazing Phare du Corduan.
Sorry, Stella, I got a bit carried away there
Edit to add: here’s a video showing the style of houses in Soulac
love the video… I’ve friend with a house at Soulac so visit from time to time…
fascinating place… as you say
Oh, I’m very jealous… it really is a gem of a town. Have you been to the indoor market?
Now you ask… I’m not sure if what comes to mind is at Soulac or elsewhere… but… I seem to recall the most amazing indoor market with such a variety of things on offer… and the seafood… mmm.
we just love wandering the streets… it’s like another world… and when they have their “spectacles” the place goes mad…music and mayhem… so much fun.
We’ll be back there next June… by which time Le Signal will no longer exist…
Yes, that sounds like Soulac. And you’re right, the seafood section is amazing!
This is it from the front:
and that’s a lovely public space in front… often with a jazzband or similar attractions,
mind you, I was last there in 2018… not sure what is currently on the go… (covid put the mockers on recent visits)… but… next year we shall all be there in force.
Nostalgia.
Last visited Soulac over 40 years ago .We had worked a summer season near Royan ( a restaurant at Plage du Chay) and had a week to explore the coast in early September on our bikes.
I loved the town and think that it was there that I ate for the first time salade de chèvre chaud(still one of my favourite meals)
Must go back.
On one of our weekend visits with pals… I was taught how to grind and make proper coffee, using a funny contraption on the stove
how to prepare and cook… asparagus…
and how to make proper mayonaise (for the asparagus)…
although, in the latter case… the “chef” was laughing so much at my attempts to speak French… that he lost the plot and threw the yolks into the “compost” pot beside the sink… instead of the egg shells.
Thankfully, we had sufficient eggs for him to have another go… very sucessful second time around.
Soulac has a certain magic… I reckon
Every time I have been to Soulac it has been full of delightful dogs
Saw this and thought of you, Stella.
