Hi Carol. I am dealing with the RSI trying to get my Carte Vitale, and the fonctionnaire with whom I am dealing insisted on translations. I wonder if by any chance we are each dealing with the same office. Someone also suggested that the rules changed recently and that they are within their rights to demand a translation. Were you asked for a traduction assermenté?
...this is why I'm needing it Sheila...carte vitale...something tells me the French will just laugh at any convention and push for it anyway. Last time I needed to do something official they all but asked me what colour my underwear was :) x

Have just seen the replies here, and what you say should be correct Martin, but I came up against a brick wall having registered as AE and the fonctionaire with whom I am dealing re registering with RSI for carte vitale etc., insisted on a traduction assermenté. I was going to argue the toss with her, but thought it might be better to get the carte vitale first. :-)
Who asked Carole?
When we moved to France I obtained official translations of documents from a translator from the official list of translators for the French Consulate in Edinburgh. Have a look at the link below. A bit laborious sending certificates back to UK for translation but it was around £50 for multiple birth/marriage certificate translations. French Consulate Official Translators
I did not need it, nor my children or my Swiss wife (not EU!). The Single European Act, with the Nice Treaty of 2001 (came into force 2003) makes it perfectly clear that NO translation is required. Tell them to go eat cake!

I agree with Martin on this. I've been here since 2002 and never had to have my birth or marriage certificates translated for any official dealings

You don't need your certificate translated, an act came in in 2000 to say any european document didn't require a translation within europe, whether it be birth, death or marriage, they know this but shouldn't be asking for it.
