I have been asked for a translation of my birth certificate and despite contacting several places have not been successful in finding anyone. Does anyone here have a recommendation please?

Sarah, go to the top left of the SFN home page where you will see 'useful links' and look for 'Translations'. There are several useful things there. Look particularly under 'COD - Ordinary legislative procedure (ex-codecision procedure) Regulation' which is about the legislation in the EP that will clear this up once and for all.
My comment was two years ago and things have moved on. RSI and other bodies seem to do what they want from one place to another. Whereas I had no translations, only one demand we dealt with quickly and did not do in the end, others have needed everything done by officially recognised and expensive translators. Even my Swiss OH whose documents are all already entirely in the four national languages, one of them French, plus English, was asked to have a translation! One sometimes suspects that they simply demand it because they are foreign! Anyway, best of luck with it.

Hope you see this reply to an old post. Do you know if what you say above still applies? I have registered as AE and have been asked by RSI for translated docs. Right now, its a cost I cannot afford but I cannot afford to delay registration as I need to get my CV asap due to a history of Cancer and ongoing treatment. Can I get away with sending my English certificate (an presumably they will need my divorce and marriage certs too as my current name is my married name and not the one on my birth cert) and telling them that the law as you state does not require a translation??

Hi Lesley. You should not need a translation if you are just registering as AE. However, you may need this translation in order to get your Carte Vitale. Are "they" (whoever you are dealing with) asking for a simple translation or are they looking for a traduction assermenté?? There is a member here who has very reasonable charges and she is a traducteur assermenté. Her name is Sarah Wafflard. Let me know if I can help further.
Hi Carole, did you ever just send in your details? And if so, what was the response? I am now in the same boat, having received a request for ID following registration as AE in January. I need an official translation of my long version birth certificate

Dave, like others they are having one over on you. I did not need it, nor my children or my Swiss wife (not EU!). The Single European Act, with the Nice Treaty of 2001 (came into force 2003) makes it perfectly clear that NO translation is required by anybody in any EU country, moving from one country to another. That includes Greece although they have an entirely different alphabet, ethnic Albanian minorities in Italy and all else. Do not pay for anything else. The EU laws can be very easily looked up. Start in English if need be, then switch to French, note the http and add that to any communication you have from anybody demanding translated documents.

You have to send her a photocopy of it stamped at your local Marie’s Office

I've had other 'official' stuff to do in the past and normally, even if you send them everything they need they contact you and ask for something else :) I'm thinking I really need to just do it and then at least they won't have an issue.

OK, look up you local delegué of the Défenseur des Droits (as I am doing with my medical stuff, albeit another topic/track) and place it is his/her hands (start at http://www.defenseurdesdroits.fr/ and then look up the local delegate from the site). If somebody in a position of responsibility is refusing to communicate or act correctly then you have every right to go to the Ombudsman and that goes for anybody else with the same or similar problems.
I didn’t need to get mine translated so I’d just bang it in Carole and see what happens.
Tried that already Brian. Andrew even rang the office but they would not connect him with this woman, Mme Fraoili. She doesnt answer my emails. I said that my birth certificate was in two official languages of the EU and didn't require translation. I also asked her to tell me under that regulation/rule she could demand these documents, and this was her reply:

On 24th July I sent PDF file of the birth certs and their traduction assermenté, and asked if she required the originals by post. She has not responded.
Sheila, France cannot change European rules they agree to without a new treaty that excludes them and there is no such thing. Vivid imaginations thinking France does not belong to Europe. If necessary complain, there are always of doing it.
If they know their job then it will be alright. If not then you need to put your foot down but NO official translation is required and it is only in their imaginations that they can say such things.
