Please can someone help me. There are times when I want to direct my answer to an individual - like just now to Fran24. So I clicked on the reply button under her post and up comes her little icon. I typed what I wanted to say to her and then clicked on the blue reply button under my post and her symbol isn’t in my reply any more - so she doesn’t know I’ve replied to her - though she might guess from the content of my reply!
Please can someone explain what I’m doing wrong and what I ought to be doing. Thanks Sue
Nothing, If you are directly underneath the person you are replying to (like with Fran24) the reply arrow doesn’t show.
It may help if you quote a relevant part of her message, which will then form part of your reply.
To quote, just use your cursor to highlight the portion of her post that relates to your own, and the word “Quote” appears under the highlight.
That’s how I generated my reply to you!
Click on that, and a reply window is opened, showing the “Quote” (see top of this page) all ready for you to type in your response. Your authorship is thereby made clear, and its relevance.
Worth noting too that you can guarantee being notified yourself (by email) of any responses to your own posts, including being “liked”, quoted or mentioned. To do this click on your own icon, to open your profile > preferences > notifications. And then choose how and when you want to be notifed of posts you are following.
Sounds a bit complicated but if you ‘snuffle around’ the various options it gets easier, if a bit hit and miss at first. But it won’t swallow you like a black hole, it’s all benign!
Thank you Tracey and Peter.
@SuePJ If I particularly want someone to get my reply… I do what I have done here in this reply… I put in their username. (mind you, you must choose the right one or there would be a right old mix-up)
SPJ, the direct reply method seems to have changed when replying to a specific person, the recipient’s picture would also appear in the upper right corner.
Thanks Stella and Lily - mind you, that’s a whole other ball game! How to include their username - do you copy and paste, or what?
If you put an “@” in the typing field, a list of names pops up. Usually your correspondent’s user-name will be there.
Click on it and it will appear in your reply post by itself. If it isn’t in the pop-up list you can complete it by typing it in yourself and it then appears as a ‘link’. If you can’t remember it, you can roll back your screen to find it in the original post. Your unfinished reply will be waiting patiently when you roll it up again on your screen. Incomplete replies are very good-natured things as a rule.
These instructions might sound complicated, and you have to use trial and error to work them out, but that’s the dubious “fun” of the new technology, and it gives your grey matter a work-out…
Bon courage, you’ll get there eventually and become a Jedi Master/Mistress
Thanks @Peter_Goble - Oooh that worked.
I had my fingers crossed 4 U
Hi Sue - its a good question and I struggled with this. Quoting is my way of coping…
Edit - I see Peter already suggested this!
Put the @ then type in the User Name… @Guy and a list appears… simply choose which @Guy_Marshall you want… mmmmm that’s odd…
On my sinister Huawei mobile phone (not really, I love it Chairman Xi ) when I type @ I get a lucky-dip set of maybe 4 names, quite often not the one I want.
It depends on which happens to be on-shift and not watching roboporn

Ooo, something else learned
I know its an old thread, but the title is apt.
Somehow I’ve managed to reduce the reply box down to just one or sometimes 2 lines of text. No idea how I managed it and even less idea how to expand it. Any ideas, anyone…please?
PS. This is on a Samsung tablet
I haven’t a Samsung tablet but have you managed to inadvertently make the keyboard bigger as I had this with a phone in android and it made all reply boxes smaller.
No, keyboard is the same.
When you do this is the whole blue bordered box only one or two lines deep, or is it just being cut off at the bottom by the top of the keyboard ? When I hold my tablet in landscape orientation, a similar thing can happen to me, although it doesn’t always . I just always post with it held in portrait mode.
Yes, the whole box is only one or 2 lines deep, orientation makes no difference
