Returning an expired UK Passport

Brexit. Yes, keeps on givingšŸ’©

Thank you all.
Will get round to it when I have finished dealing with three different departments in one of the three hospitals involved, visiting nurses, carers and physios and most complex and demanding of all the taxis!
All wonderful, but exhausting.

The Passport Office almost certainly receives all its mail in bulk without signing for it as do many large organisations. In the UK getting a ā€˜certificate of postingā€™ at a Post Office suffices for legal purposes.

We sent our passports by Lettre suivie internationale and it only cost ā‚¬7.30 fully trackable

Thanks for your info.
That will probably be my best bet

Iā€™ve never had tracked post from France to U.K. show any updated information beyond the carrier confirming ā€œarrival in destination countryā€.

Probably correct. It should give more detail as inā€¦ .
Mrs Signed for the package wearing a very skimpy nightie .

I spoke to the post office when I returned mine at the beginning of last week. They recommended sending it ā€œsigned forā€ to HMPO in Hemel Hempstead , so I would know when it arrived. I am glad I did this as for a few days last week, that HMP Office was not accepting new mail and had asked Royal Mail to hold any deliveries but at least I knew what was happening. When HMPO received my old passport I got both SMS and email confirmation that it had been received.

Thank you for your reply. I posted it yesterday using International suivi using the address given on the passport office site.
This included a code in the address.

Update. Just received an email from the passport office today 7/2 /25
Stating they have received my old passport.
3 days!!! . Thatā€™s quite impressive.

Thereā€™s another trap. The passport office used to add the remaining time of your old passport to your new one. The life of the passport might then be, say, ten years and seven months.

Brits have been getting stung as the EU will only recognise the passport as valid for ten years from issue. The expiry date is immaterial and you need to subtract your six months left from the ten year anniversary, not the expiry.

Itā€™s caught a lot of people out. The passport office has stopped doing that now.

Just as an aside here, I didnā€™t bother to renew my English passport as I now have a French one. However, reaching the ripe old age of 65 I investigated registering for my English pension and you need a valid UK passport to claim your pension. Luckily I did look at applying several months in advance.
I sent my old English passport to ā€˜HM Passport Office, Long Croft Road, CORBY NN18 8UA. Royaume Uniā€™ from the post office using Un recommandĆ© International and the paper I have includes a tracking number. It cost about 11ā‚¬

Thatā€™s the address I used to return mine , I got an email confirming delivery within 4 days.
Your French passport should be duel UK /France so your pension shouldnā€™t be a problem.

Iā€™ve never heard of a dual passport?

I imagine @renard meant that the French passport would be acceptable as ID to claim the UK pension? The GOV.UK website mentions ā€œphoto IDā€ it doesnā€™t say it has to be a UK passport.

As far as Iā€™m aware if you are eligible for a UK passport , a passport from another country can be duel. I presume you would have to request it.

Dual nationality
France allows the existence of double nationality or multiple nationalities. The same applies in the UK and this means that a British citizen who acquires French nationality will not be required to give up his/her former nationality.

Btw French Post Offices will also issue a free equivalent of the UK Certificate of Posting.

OK understood - but for claiming a UK pension itā€™s not a matter of nationality, they just want you to validate who you are - by providing various bits of evidence e.g. National insurance number, proof of address, and a photo ID. A passport works for this, but I assume a photo card driving licence would as well?

I was puzzled by this:

i.e. that they seemed to be asking @Carolyn_Stewart for a British passport, which is not mentioned as a requirement on the pension claim webpage, just ā€œphoto IDā€ā€¦ ??

Yes, I know that - I have British, French and German nationality. And I have a passport from each country. So I have dual (well triple) nationality but I do not say I have a dual passport.

It was just that phrase that was curious. My French passport is French, it is not dual.
