One of the good guys.

I don’t have a lot of interest in footballers, but Denis Law was rather special. My opinion of him was cemented when, playing for City he scored against United, which probably sent them down, and he could not bring himself to celebrate.

I saw his early career at Huddersfield when he was a teenager. It was obvious he was an exceptional talent and no surprise when he moved on (Huddersfield bulit their floodlights with the money). He wasn’t very good at shooting though and his subsequent success in scoring goals came as a pleasant surprise. An abiding memory is of him and several other young players dressed up to the nines in Italian style suits and smoking “Turkish” cigarettes as they sauntered into the nearby “Town” cafe for a coffee before the game.

Saddened, but not surprised to read the lengthy tributes this morning. I missed very few Utd matches between 1965-77 and there was always the possibility that with Law, Best and Charlton playing together one would see something spectacularly memorable.

I was so disappointed that he missed that amazing night at Wembley when United won their first European Cup. The M/c Evening News carried a pic of him watching from a hospital bed.

Lastly, at the end of his career when he appeared at OT in a City shirt and scored the infamous backheel that helped send Utd down into Division Two. I think he was too saddened and had too much respect for the fans to celebrate that goal, he just trudged back to the centre circle.
