The subject of ultra processed foods seems pretty topical at the moment. Should we be worried?
I’m not, because I avoid them. But it’s good to be reminded.
I heard someone say one key characteristic of upfs is that they contain ingredients you wouldn’t find in your kitchen. It’s not the same thing as something being ultra processed, but it allows you to eat food that would otherwise count as upf.
However, we occasionally eat pizza, and sausage.
Everything in moderation, as my grandma used to say.
And that Guardian video is a bit clickbaity because the thumbnail implies that butter is being made from coal, which of course it isn’t - they’re actually talking about margarine which is a whole different ball-game.
Medical opinion is (I believe) coming around to the view that fats are not necessarily bad for you - it’s a matter of having a balanced diet that’s based on unprocessed foods as much as possible.
Which is common sense really.
A MacDo burger or Greggs’ sausage roll once in a while won’t kill you, but if that’s your entire diet then look out.
