The Dot Com bubble šŸ¤”

LLMs are being lauded for providing a lot of benefits, many of which were evolving anyway. No doubt the new level of investment has driven faster and deeper use of the technology for many beneficial and some malign purposes. However, I have no doubt this ā€œnew greatest thingā€ will also implode, as have all NGTs Iā€™ve seen in the forty plus years Iā€™ve been a participant and latterly an observer in the industry.

Johnā€¦whatā€™s an NGT please?

(Three letter acronyms always baffled meā€¦)

Now if youā€™d asked about NFTs, youā€™d have had me

CRAP :sunglasses:

One never hears of blockchain these days, yet it was the latest, greatest thing only a few years ago. LLMs too will be commoditised and subsumed into the wide, wide world of IT. DeepSeek has already pricked the balloon. Another tulip bulb moment for the Industry. :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

And for those like me who were baffled by the first acronym, LLMs are ā€œLarge Language Modelsā€.

A bit like Naomi Campbell but curvier and more chatty.

Yeah, basically the dictionary AI uses to churn stuff outā€¦ kind of.

All just IT under another name just as the current popular fad called an Air Fryer isā€¦ an oven.

Bob Mortimer thinks AI is a road that takes him to Edinburgh

Totally agree, AI = a bit of swanky coding, Cloud services = somewhere in a data centre, hopefully backed up :grinning:, Big data = lots of data sitting on a series of storage devices, on-prem = in your data centre, off-prem = sitting in someone elseā€™s data centre, hopefully backed up :grinning:, outsourced = paying someone else that the chief technology officer can blame when it all goes tits up or the data is stolen by some 14 year olds in China :grinning:

I was that soldier :joy:

I prefer to call it ā€œusing someone elseā€™s computerā€ when explaining to non-techies. It properly brings it home.

Marvellous abuse from users on the MS help site about their shitty AI product. Thereā€™s a ton of it :joy: Good old MS, same lousy development ethos as in 1985. There is now a button in Word Preferences on my Macs, but it looks like it was plonked in there in a panic :scream:

Canā€™t find a button in Excel, maybe in the next release :face_with_hand_over_mouth: But it does have a button to produce gay spreadsheetsā€‹

this does not work. why does microsoft keep posting the same answer? iā€™ve done it all. all of it. iā€™ve turned off ā€˜connected experiencesā€™ and still the stupid unwanted unasked for ā€˜copilotā€™ is there in word. doesnā€™t matter about restarts or reinstalling or anything.

youā€™ve created an intellectually vacuous product that should be optional if someone needs AI to write something for them. every thinking person, writer, student, lecturer, poet, artist, person who wants to journal or write their own thoughts should not have to keep asking for detailed instructions to disable the damn thing that they didnā€™t want.

if you genuinely were responsive to feedback youā€™d add in a disable button. but you donā€™t. you just keep posting the same rubbish responses that do not work. imagine any other service - you go to a dr or a lawyer or buy an ice-cream and itā€™s not what you purchased. they they try to charge you more to solve the issue, or otherwise provide pages of meaningless instructions about how you can do something yourself, or wind back a version of the advice provided or the product bought. perhaps you could try to separate the cream and the eggs or the wheat from the other ingredients to make a cone. sound like madness and an impossibility? it is. just like what youā€™ve created.

i note ironically that the damn co-pilot doesnā€™t come on when iā€™m typing this response. why? because you donā€™t want to use your own AI algorithm of complaints - they must be endless based on these comments alone in this forum, to say nothing of other forums.

so, will you create a disable feature or failing that, withdraw the upgrade and ask people to opt-in if they want it?

otherwise, how can I and hundreds of thousands of other people disable this unwanted dumb ā€˜featureā€™ that you have imposed on us? and please for the love of god donā€™t just reply with the same useless unhelpful info that does not resolve this mess youā€™ve created.

Quite common for some of the people I knew

I received 3 documents from the notaire for filling in and signing but could only print off 2 of them, in PDF.

But the 3rd required Word and whatever I did I couldnā€™t print. At one point I got to MS and they wanted to sell it to me, just to print one doc. My friend Eddie said put it on a memory stick and bring it to me and Iā€™ll print it for you. I did that but then found I could print it myself from there.

In case it happens again you can get free software that will read and write Word documents, such as OpenOffice or LibreOffice

I have already got LO, have used it to set up my spreadsheets and also some writing files, but for some reason I failed to work out how to use it with this doc.
