I’ve been watching a programme on Beeb channel 4 about the organisation of this amazing music festival. Lots of work went into preparing a site but local residents fought against the festival and after a frantic search often using a helicopter a new site was found in upstate New York. There wasn’t enough time to build the stage and perimeter fencing so they chose to prioritise the stage. Music fans faced some horrendous weather and the organisers had plenty of headaches. They had to fly people in because all the roads were blocked. I won’t say any more. Must have been screened before but first time for me.
Yes, that’s an old documentary but still worth watching. I believe the hard-up organisers had to allow free entry when it was realized the crowds couldn’t be suitably martialed.
Brilliant concert which was very much of that era. Some pretty good British artistes on the bill too ie The Who, Joe Cocker and Ian Matthews.
My top three musical moments…
Ten Years After
Richie Havens
Joan Baez…
maybe
Let’s not forget Carlos Santana and Sir James Hendrix!
My three favourites would have been Janis Joplin, Sly and the Family Stone and CSNY.
But what a line-up!
I was still at primary school back then so had no idea about it. Woodstock to me was a place we passed on the way to Oxford to do the clothes shopping.
Although Joni Mitchell was unable to attend, she wrote a beautiful song about the event
Santana yes but ( he says controversially ) Hendrix was overrated imo. Stills and Young were better guitarists in my humble opinion. I seem to recall reading somewhere a long time ago that Stills gave Hendrix lessons. I would even say that Ian Matthews was a better guitarist.
I await the backlash………
Keeping with the Sandy Denny connection (in the ‘music to lighten your mood’ thread), here’s a version of Woodstock performed by Richard Thompson at a concert celebrating the work of Joni Mitchell.
