We got some rain at the moment, only almost 2 years late but it might help.
West Riding yes, Saddleworth no. Wuthering Heights country, about 100m from my front door.
Edit: Not sure how you can try to be so specific with all that white.
Well, not way too far away!
Actually there’s an online sport where people play that sort of informed guess but with places around the world. https://www.geoguessr.com/
Grew up on the Pennines, so was very familiar with the sort of scene you posted of millstone grit and snow. My guess was based on the style of dry stone wall in the foreground, the topography and the small early mill chimney in the background. My other possibility had been somewhere else, W to NW of Huddersfield.
Some SFers might be unaware that the English textile industry started on the Pennine slopes and only moved down into much larger mills in the C19th. Many of the original mills survived by being re-purposed.
The mill in the photo opened in 1814 and was water powered, making fustian, so was quite early. The original building was quite small and the site was extended a few times, leaving little of the original structure. It was working at it’s original purpose until 1998. It was listed in the mid 1980’s and then repurposed in the 2000’s as so many are by being converted into houses and flats.
Thanks, good to learn that these lovely old buildings are being repurposed. In Cumbria this didn’t happen (though things might have changed in the years since we left). Lovely old pale pink sandstone barns that were too small for modern tractors couldn’t be turned into starter apartments for young locals.
Anyone in Normandie care to say what the roads are like, especially the A84 - I’ll be coming back that way on Saturday.
We had a few flakes today but now, where we are in Correze, it’s heavy rain. Bummer!
No snow here in 34……… yet, but it’s been hammering down with rain today, which I must say does feel a bit unusual, but nice Just need to get the sun back
I went out today, local roads still have snow but the major roads are clear and are being regularly salted. Still very cold but it should be warming up by the weekend.
I disagree in spades. On a bizarre trip in the Indian Himalayas, trying to climb out of the Sutlej valley [Himachal Pradesh] in Feb, the snow was crotch deep. Trudging thru’ it at 3k metres and climbing, wearing gaiters, each lift of the foot simply rammed the snow down between gaiter and sock [wearing climbing 'jodhpurs] and into the boots.
Camping at night on the mountain, I made sure that my bedtime sox were kept dry. In the mornings we had to defrost our boots, which had frozen solid, to get them on and put on the ‘day sox’ which were also frozen, then sodden with icy cold water. Most unpleasant.
We did have a camp fire one night. Firewood kindly donated by a villiger in the village of Purbani. My pal, not paying attention, allowed his wet sox to fall into the fire. This meant that he now had no bedtime sox - a disaster.
All good. Even my tiny 1.74m wide lane was gritted. The roads are all clear.
Phew. Every time I’m here on my own I promise myself that I will be organised and leave with plenty of time to get to Ouistreham.
And every time - every. single. time. - I’m disorganised, leave half an hour late and have to drive down the A84 at 130kph on the nail to not miss the ferry.
Knowing I won’t be doing that on icy roads is a relief.
But this time I’m going to be organised.
Definitely.
How very sensible. Couldn’t choose better. I was there for a week, before Xmas. Sublime.
Anyone well up on German can likely do Dutch [speaking, German whilst having a cold] , Flemish [speaking, German + pleuracy] , and DK, SW, NR
Spanish/Italian/Portuguese - I bet @vero has no trouble with these, either.
I sat outside in a thickish jumper this afternoon getting a dose of Vit D for free it was that warm, almost 61°F on the thermometer. The rain we had weds night and yesterday for a bit hardly wetted the ground.
Well, I’ve been in crotch deep snow several times times in the Pennines, once when the photo was taken. I’ve never had snow go down the top of my gaiters. It could be the consistency of the snow that caused your issue.
I used to have Yeti gaiters on my Koflach boots, absolutely nothing got in.
The only temp in F, apart from 212F and 32F, that I can do in C … 61F = 16C
-40°F = -40°C
I rocked up to Ouistrehem on a Stormy Monday [may have been a Tuesday - just as bad] to be told night time crossing cancelled, come back tomorrow for the daytime sailing. So, living 75 mins south, I went home and slept in my bed, rather than on the floor of a saloon.
Wednesday was not worse. The ship sailed.
Was Thursday oh, so sad? I don’t recall.
The eagle didn’t fly on Friday tho’ on Saturday I may have gone out to play.
Being a heathen, come Sunday I did not get down on my knees and pray.
Another time, because of the problem I have with driving in the dark, I arrived +/- 16:00 for the 23:00 sailing and kipped down in my camper.
