VPN and Orange

I have a subscription to NORDVPN, which is installed on my computers. My router is an Orange Livebox 5 which does not accept VPNs. I run my TV through a connection from my Livebox to a laptop which has the VPN installed. This is not ideal and I would like to get a router that I could link directly to both Livebox and TV. Does anyone have any ideas, please?

Our livebox5 accepts VPNs?

I just had a look at mine and couldn’t find anywhere to add a VPN connection

Like Jane I’m not sure what you mean by the Livebox not accepting VPNs unless you mean that it does not implement any VPN clients and so there is no way to set up the VPN end points - which it doesn’t. That’s Orange’s choice to make.

You can use a router between the TV and Livebox and set the VPN up on the roouter, or use a Firestick and run the VPN on that or, if you have an Android TV there are VPN clients which run on the TV.

I might ask why you VPN everything though. It seems to be a thing these days in the interests of “security” - which, by and large, is just fine without a VPN.

I could see it for the TV if you want UK or US smart TV apps so want to fudge your geolocation but there’s probably little benefit for your other devices.

I want to watch iPlayer, and am not very bothered at the moment about security.
I have a Firestick and will try this. If it works, the problem is easily solved. Many thanks.

The alternative seems to be in buying a router to plug between the Livebox (which definitely won’t accept NORDVPN) and the TV but most seem to involve more electronic knowledge than I have unless I go for the one linked to NORD which is not that cheap. The Firestick is easy enough to try.

Thanks for all your responses.

PS. I keep on typing lower case letter ‘i’ instead of ‘I’ but have never found any automatic correction on Word, LibreOffice, etc. Am I the only one with this problem?

OK, that makes more sense.

Not sure if there is a NordVPN client for the Firestick … OK, hang on - a very quick check suggests that there is so you should be able to install the client on there and enjoy uninterrupted iPlayer.

I’m not sure why you are having this difficulty. Livebox doesn’t need to have a separate connection for Nord. Once you’re online, the Nord app can connect you.

Our home has Orange Livebox 7 and a repeater installed. All the units of (Apple) hardware connect to the wifi then use Nord VPN through the app on whichever device we want for UK tv. No problems!

Good luck :slightly_smiling_face:

If you only want to watch iplayer and already have a firestick then put the app for your VPN on the firestick and away you go. No need to over complicate things by putting it on your modem or router. The beauty of that is it is extremely mobile. You can plug it into your PC or laptop or just take it with you on holiday.

I have an Asus router that I run the NordVPN VPN on. It connects to my ISP router and provides WiFi connectivity over the VPN. It works very well and has done for several years. That way, you don’t have to install the NordVPN software on any device, just connect to the Asus router instead of your LiveBox. There are good tutorials on the NordVPN website on how to do this. If you have to connect your TV via Ethernet, then you can set up the router so that you can connect to the ethernet ports on the VPN router.

Come back rabbit-ears aerials, all is forgiven.

If you have a firestick +VPN on an HDMi port you can watch all your uk media on it and use UK apps if it is logged to a UK account. That leaves the TV free to watch French media and download French apps,

Well, back in 2022 at least, per this link, it wasn’t possible to configure a VPN service directly on a domestic Livebox, as opposed to a professional Livebox (which does has this option, but it needs to be activated, and then configured). The solution is/was to use a secondary router, on which you could configure a VPN server, and then connect your end user devices to that.

Which is exactly what I do, as detailed above

Yes, I used to do exactly the same. The problem is that every device using the router is on the same VPN settings. To many this is an advantage but I found it inconvenient. For example, My WiFi trail camera will not work if a VPN is on. This means I can’t watch my camera while the wife watches iPlayer. If you put a VPN on each of the devices that need it, you can be more selective. Express VPN for example allows 8 devices on one subscription.

You need a more flexible router then

Quite possibly. I spent ages setting up a VPN on my router but this was some time ago. It only sends out one signal with one vpn setting to all devices. Is there a router that will treat various devices differently?

It can be done on OpenWRT, though I would not say it is “easy”, but it is possible - but I have my Internet Radio set to use a VPN with everything else going through the 4G connection (currently don’t need a VPN for that as it’s on a UK SIM).

Not sure exactly what you mean by this ?.

My ASUS router implements the VPN and serves it via 2.4G/5G Wifi and through it’s ethernet ports. It has a different IP range to my ISP router. I can use any number of devices simultaneously via the Asus VPN router and there is no conflict between any of them, not any conflict with devices using my ISP router. This can all be done without having to resort to OpenWRT or similar.

Ah. Do you use just one router ?. I.e are you using a single router for your incoming internet and your VPN ? If so, this will not work very well in the way you describe unless, as billy says, you can configure it using more sophisticated software.
I use two routers, my ISPs router which serves my French internet connection via Wifi and Ethernet and a separate router with a VPN which does the same for the VPN connection. Setting up with two routers is quite easy.

I see what you are getting at HB. Yes, I do use one router for everything. My livebox is in the basement and connected by ethernet to the router on the ground floor.
